EEEEKKK!!! it's the evil tick of death!! I had that happen to me with my brand new Dell comp... the western digital drive just went ka-put w/in a month of me setting it all up. was terribly annoying because i was in the middle of some big projects, and spent a solid week burning everything i could. thankfully, dell replaced for free, and even came to my house to install it. my boyfriend had it happen a few weeks later, but he couldn't figure out which drive it was, and so lost a ton of stuff. :(

hope your HD holds out for a few more days, so u can backup stuff!!

yea, i hate when computers do that :( fortunately, never happened to me, howerever i did scrap my old compaq (aka junk-pile scrap) and use its 60 gb maxtor as a media drive :D its going fine...im getting some "HD coolers" to "extend the lifetime"

Friend of mine actually received a S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, & Reporting Technology) error on startup before his drive went kaput......... otherwise, I'm sure he would have been in the same situation right now (with the "click of death")

no but i do have a 40 gig back up hd that i was using as a slave drive to put all my important stuff. so i still have all my docs/music/p0rn safe and sound, but my main HD with the OS went down so as of right now it's just in-operable. just a nuisance, i'm going to go to beast buy tomorrow maybe to get a new one, and check to see if my current hd is underwarrenty, bastards.

oh yea, and i'm on dial up, cause there's no broadband out here except for wireless, but the start up costs are horrendous for that. so i think i might hold off for a while

yea my maxtor has been clicking for about 2 months before i decided to replace it.

Now i have all my important stuff aka porn/mp3's/documents/warez/misc on my 120 GB Western Digital

and i set up my second 120Gb western digital into 4 partitions 15/15/45/45 where one 15 paritiion is my primary partition and the second 15 has all the Program Files

yea i got a 7 dollar hard drive cooler for my fujitsu hd, its quite and should help out my lil 35 gig baby :D

It's a heart wrenching, gut chilling, metal on metal clicking or even worse screeching. It pains me to think back on the different times the several IBM Deskstars I've owned have done that to me.:bawl:

Yes, hard drives used to come with a 3 year warranty. well, i was looking through the old box (yes, i still have the box) and it says that it came with a 3 year warrenty, so i was going to call the number, but i guess i'll check the website since it's sunday,....thanx a bunch guys!

they finally sent me back my replacement drive...no complaints so far, they sent back a 60 gig for my 30 gig that i sent them...some deal. now, let just plug it in....

do activities like gaming decrease the life of your hard drive?

i'm just wondering, because i've never known someone irl who has had a hard drive die on them. i've had hard drives with problems, i've had motherboards and cpus goingout, etc, but i've never heard the "click of death" myself or on anyone else's computer.

so i'm just wondering if certain kinds of usage causes them to wear out faster, or what? :shrug:

The component that is clicking is in a sealed vaccuum. Opening the drive anywhere but a clean room would effectively destroy the drive. Also the part that is clicking is a fragile component, if you hear it, it is already damaged... you are just waiting for it to fail.
