View Full Version : Video Cards. Which and why?

This is another one of those "which card is better" questions. I've been searching around for some suggestions from previous posts, but I'm still debating.
I'm looking to upgrade my existing 32mb GeForce2 MX to something faster. The budget is approximately $100, give or takes $20 after taxes. If I don't have to spend 100 bucks, I prefer not having to.
Having said that, here are the suggestions mentioned in previous posts that interested me.

Radeon 9000LE Pro
GeForce3 Ti's

I was reading up on some of the reviews on Sharky and it seems the Radeon 9000 is the one you get the most bang for your buck.
Personally, I think the GeForce MX series are a joke so I'm skiping the GeForce4 versions. My MX can't even run NBA Live 2000 on a 1.2Ghz Athlon with all the detail turned on on 800x600. The game its almost 4 years old for crying out loud!

Anyway, this is mainly for gaming. Since I got another system that I used for work.

Right now what i'm interested in is to know if there are any problems with this cards for those who own one or know of someone who does? Are they happy with it? Any issues?

This is from Toms Hardware guide that was posted/linked by G|A a few months ago. I think they use JKII for comparison.

Don't leave out an 8500LE. I think the 9000, 8500LE and GF3 500 are all pretty close as far as price/preformance goes, and you can't go wrong with any one. Keep an eye on the deals page and buy the next one that shows up there. I've got my eyes on an 8500LE for Christmas. I only have a Duron 700, so anything else is overkill.

128MB R8500LE - cheaper but not as fast as GF4 Ti4200. Faster than both GF3 Ti500 and R9000
64MB GF4 Ti4200 - best bang for the buck but it's more expensive ($120+)

Cool! thanks for the input.
I've been researching all day about this...the Radeon 8500LE for $90 with free shipping at Xtreme Gear(anyone know this place?). Whereas the GeForce4 Ti4200 is like $128 at newegg.
Now i'm in cali, so i gotta pay tax for both stores, but at least shipping is free. Both cards have 128mb.
Now the debate is this, spend the extra 40 bucks for a slighter faster card? or save the 40 bucks and go have some sushi....hmmmm decisions decisions.

Best to stay away from.

I'd check out www.TCWO.com and www.googlegear.com which are good places to buy from.
