my vote for the stupidest act of the day. :D
i had a roommate once that swore that keeping pizza in the oven kept it fresh. then he'd actually leave it there overnight. i pretty much think that he misunderstood the idea that it will keep it fresh...as in hot after delivery...kinda like those heat bags they have. aaaanyhow i never really complained about it because it was usually gone the next day (pizza=good food).
but yeah, i'd always check the oven before heating. it just plain makes sense. aside from stuff just being left in there, what if something else is amiss? something much worse than burning a pizza box could happen.

my mother swore by keeping bread and baked goods in the oven..she always said the pilot light gave off enough heat to keep the stuff fresh by killing molds/mildew..I don't know how true it is-but we never had stale crusty bread laying around.

i never check my oven before heating. since i live alone and rarely use the oven, it's not like i just have random stuff in there to worry about.
and, unlike my mom, i don't leave stuff in the microwave after it's done heating.

The reason why people keep bread and baked goods in the oven, is because it acts like a bread box since the oven seals once the door is closed. It does work.

i never check the oven before i turn it on, because i never put anything in it to keep it fresh. my fiance` had never done this before either.
to make it worse really, the same thing happend at some friends the other weekend. and we all had a big conversation about all the reasons why you don't store food in the oven.

I had pizza at my friend's house the other day. I walked into the kitchen later to get another slice of pizza.... So where is the pizza box? In the oven. He says that he does it because it keeps the pizza warm, kind of like when you leave stuff in the microwave...

I keep the pixxa in the oven while I am eating so that it does stay warm. Once the feeding frenzy is over it goes into the fridge for future use. Leaving it in the oven would seem like an invitation for all sorts of unhealthy things to start growing on it. I'll typically check the oven when turning it on since it use it for pot and pan storage.

A friend of mine had a similar but much more unfortunate incident - they put the pizza in the oven to keep warm, and one of the kids was playing around & accidentally started the self-cleaning cycle on the oven.
For those of you who have never done this, it involves the oven heating up to 600+ degrees for about 30-60 mins to burn off any excess food on the inside of the oven. Becuse of the high heat, it also locks the oven door for the duration of the cleaning cycle... so there they are, with a whole pizza in the oven at 600 degrees and the oven door is locked.
Smoke is pouring out of the oven and thay can't turn it off. They ended up having to call the landlord to get access to the gas shut off (was locked in a basement storage area), but by this time the oven's been going for a good 15-20 mins & they had smoke damage in the kitchen. Luckily, they got their renters insurance to cover the damage.

Ok, I suddenly had a funny but gross, memory from college.
My good friend and roommate had a peculiar habit...he would leave pizza out on the counter for days on end. I told him that I thought it was unhealthy due to bacteria and stuff.
His response was "Yeah, if I ate it like that I might get sick. BUT, you see, the MICROWAVE kills everything and makes it safe for me to eat again." (He actually took two day old pizza left on the counter, placed it on a plate, nuked it, and then took a bite to illustrate this.)
He never got sick from it but still just strikes me as wrong. :munch: :puke:

no, pizza boxes do not belong in the oven. All pizza boxes belong to me and should be returned to me unopened ASAP. If it's still warm I might give you a tip. Thank you for returning all of my lost pizza boxes. I miss them dearly.
