Classical music probably saved my sanity when my son was a younger. He had such sleep issues, the ONLY way I could get him to sleep is by playing soft music.

i grew up with classical music. piano for 10 years, cello for 12. although i hated all but one year of cello, i love the sound of it. classical is definitely soothing. talk about talent: beethoven was deaf and still create a symphony involving so many instruments.

What are good classical pieces? The one that I absolutely love is Pachebel's Canon. I can listen to that for hours. Baroque pieces are pretty good...like Handel's Water Music or Bach's Jesus Joy of Man.

i'm more of a romantic period guy and contemporary stuff. debussy and chopin are really relaxing. mozart's fantasy in d minor is really good. one CD or MP3 that i've been trying to find is a barber cello piece that i played. but i don't remember the name. but barber is pretty crazy. that was one of the hardest pieces i've played and my piano player friend played a really difficult barber piece as well.

piano for 19 years, violin for 17. i've lasted most of my life with classical music. i'm particularly fond of brahms, paganini, sarasate, faure, liszt, rachmaninov, liadov, scriabine, and aaron copeland.

hmm. funny. i just noticed that i listed my fave composers from romantics to the super-romantics and uber-impressionists (save copeland).

i really don't like classical music. when i was like 8 or 9, i'd listen to it while i was going to sleep. but then i discovered the beauty of rock and roll and totally lost interest in classical.

now, i find it distracting to try to listen to classical.

however, in the last year, i've been exploring a lot more music. i've explored folk and roots music, and from there moved to some jazz and blues. that led me to early classic rock. so i'm sure that somewhere along the way, i'll get into classical music too....

I like those....to a certain extent. I would suggest Faure's Pavane and Ravel's Pavane for a dead princess. :) Those two are the ultimate relax pieces.

But that being said....I find that I can't relax to classical music. I end up conducting along with the music!! :D Yes...I am a nerd.
