Do you think animals have a soul/feelings/emotions? Yes or No.
Do you think physician-assisted suicide is ok? Yes or No.
Do you think suicide is ok? Yes or No.

7. No. Suicide is the easy way out...funny I never though I'd be the one saying that...
8. As of now, Yes I support the death penalty. I think that if someone is going to willfully hurt someone and kill them, I believe that they should have the same treatment. If they prevent someone from having a life, I would hope someone would prevent them from having one. Maybe my views on this will change, but I am a firm believer in the saying " an eye for an eye ".

1. male
2. Yes
3. depends on what you mean by rights. I think they should be treated as creatures with emotions that can hurt.
4. No
5. souls, i don't know, maybe. emotions and feelings, definately!
6. No. Since the answer to my next question is no, i'd also have to say no to this one. I'm sure many people suffer and it would be best for them to pass on. But i can't ignore what my religion says on this issue. Since suicide is considered wrong, so is helping someone commit it.
7. No
8. Yes, but for the right reasons. I support it as a way to prevent a person from committing the act again. Not for revenge though. Religously i'm allowed to put to death a person who has killed someone close to me, but it is also said to be much better if you can forgive the person.

2) Yes (More thinking goes into bigger decisions)
3) Nope. Although I also don't think that we SHOULD treat them certain ways
4) Nope, I love a big steak!
5) Soul - No, feelings - yes, to a point, emotions - yes, to a point
6) Tough one. At this point, I'd say yes, but only for terminal patients
7) Nope. It's a permanent solution to a temperary problem (Yes, I know I can't spell)
8) Wholeheartedly!
What's this for? A class of some sort I'm guessing?

When you make decisions, do you usually make the decision that is in the best interest of all parties involved? Meaning, do you weigh the all pros and all cons before making the decision? Yes or No.
It depends on how you define "all the pros and all the cons". i try to consider every possible impact it will have on me and those i care about. i'd like to think i consider my impact on society, but that carries pretty small weight in my decision-making process.
Do you think animals have rights? Yes or No.
No. I think animals should be treated well as a valued part of the ecosystem. however, to say that they have "rights" in the sense of humans, i think that's bull.
Are you a vegetarian? Yes or No.
Yes
Do you think animals have a soul/feelings/emotions? Yes or No.
this is three different questions. I believe they have feelings (ie, they can feel pain). I believe they have some form of emotion, although i do not think it is equivalent to human emotions, because i do not believe they have humanity's power of reasoning. nor do i believe they have a soul.
Do you think physician-assisted suicide is ok? Yes or No.
No. I think it is a negative when the people who are supposed to save our lives are taking lives instead.
Do you think suicide is ok? Yes or No.
I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't encourage anyone else to do it. but how do you say "it's wrong to commit suicide"? if someone's done it, it's academic to discuss whether it was "ok" or not.
Are you a supporter of the death penalty? Yes or No.
the rational side of me says no. a punishment like life in prison, in solitary confinement, is an extensive and permanent punishment. and much like i don't think doctors should be taking life, the idea of the government (which is formed for the protection of the people) taking life bothers me.
my emotional side, however, says that for sick f---s who molest and kill children, etc, stoning, drawing and quatering, or burning at the stake is not punishment enough.

Only minimally, and certainly not as defined by Peta. Closer to 'no'.
Are you a vegetarian? Yes or No.
No. If we're not supposed to eat animals, then why're they made of meat? Mmmm... big bloody steak.
Do you think animals have a soul/feelings/emotions? Yes or No.

stupid decisions like, where we're gonna go eat or something, no.
if it's a more important decision yes.
Do you think animals have rights? Yes or No.
not really... not that it's ok to torture animals...but i don't see it as an issue of the animal but more of the person, and the responsibility of a person. Thus I support things like a person getting arrested for starving his dog, because it's negelect by the person....not an animal's right to eat.
Are you a vegetarian? Yes or No.
no, i like meat.

only around 5%. that doesn't sound unreasonable to me. in fact, it sounds a little low compared to some numbers i've seen.
overall, interesting survey results. some predictable contradictions in people's thinking, but interesting to see how it plays out anyway.
the number that shocked me was that 70% of the people who didn't believe in animal rights said that animals have souls. must not have been the people around here :hmm:

Well first off, I fixed the results for vegetarians...I made a mistake and he caught me on it. The numbers before were switched around.
Second, the question about whether animals have souls was whether you believe they had any of those things, not just a soul. The question was soul/feelings/emotion. So if you said yes to one, the answer to the question was yes. The point was to catch the contradiction which was that you don't think animals have rights, yet you think they have emotions? Or that they can feel pain? SO that was the point of that.

right, but i think you're using way too broad of classifications there.
saying that an animal has a "soul" is markedly different than saying it has feelings. and it has vastly different implications for whether animals should have rights or not.
secondly, to made a valid assertion that people who say that animals don't have rights but they do have souls are being somehow inconsistent, you need more survey questions to see how they feel about people in relation to animals. for instance, if they don't believe that humans have rights, then they're not being inconsistent, as they do not believe that any creatures with souls have rights.
not that any of this matters, as you did well on your speech ;)

I do understand the relation to humans, and perhaps I did assume too much that these people who believed animals don't have rights think humans have rights. But, I guess it didn't really relate to my speech which was on utilitarianism.
Also, I was asking it the way you're thinking. What I meant is do you think animals have any of these traits, and it related to my topic of utilitarianism. It didn't really matter if you believed one or all of them...it was supposed to be a general question. If my speech was on animal rights, I'm sure it wouldn't have been so broad.
