ya, i don't wanna spend much more than that, but the only thing i can find that cheap are winmodems, and unfortunately they don't work in linux. does fry's have an online store? we don't have them in my neck of the woods.

winmodems will work with linux, but the process for configuring them is very intense (sometimes involves compiling the kernel).

You might try calling around to some of the 'hole-in-the-wall' computer stores in your area. These places usually sell 'cheap' (i.e. you get what you pay for) type stuff, and would be a perfect place to buy a cheap modem. Most cities have one or two of these places around (where they try to sell you a 299$ Cyrix system) I have used a couple of these places to buy things that I don't really care about (floppy drives, cheap keyboards, temporary mice etc..).
Happy hunting!

P.s. if all else fails, check www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com) . And, yes configuring a winmodem under linux is more trouble than it is worth (save the time and spend 5-10$ more on a non-winmodem).

For a cheapo V90 56K modem, I goto Fry's and look for the ones with $20 mail in rebates or something. I wouldn't want to pay more than $15 for a GENERIC modem.

Look at the ISA modem section of http://www.compgeeks.com/ . I just bough an External Compaq 56k modem and it costed my $70, the ones here are just as good and have jumpers but costs much less. I was looking for Linux capable modems too and found this place RIGHT AFTER I bought the external modem. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/frown.gif Good luck.

Go to like Best Buy, Office Max, or Comp usa and buy the cheapo ones for $5 after rebate. I think some are called BestData or something. They're better then 28.8! http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

The Best Data modems on rebate are winmodems, and get this, they require MMX. That's a load of crock!
