btw there's a petition about it. Its not doing too well with 7 whole signatures http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?1238disc
Its surprising Abercombie and Fitch didn't think this up. They've done stupid stuff {thongs for tikes (http://money.cnn.com/2002/05/22/news/companies/abercrombie/index.htm), Wong bros shirts (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2002/04/18/MN109646.DTL)} in the past for publicity.

is this term supposed to be similar to what Redneck means? or like, "Honky Tonk" country or something?

Wow, I didn't know "Honky" was offensive. Apparently I should be outraged.
Sheesh, some people are so petty. I should buy the damn thing just for the hell of it.

I wouldn't get one becuase it means nothing to me. What is that word? Give me a shirt that actually describes me. I want a shirt that says "White Boy" on it. That has an obious meaning to it and should not be taken as vulger unless you hate who you are.

honky
n : offensive name for White person [syn: whitey]
I don't get it, wheres the offensive part? Just the context?
I laughed my ass of when i read this though "[syn: whitey]" considering i pulled this out of a dictionary.

are you guys serious? calling me honky is the same as calling me a cracker or an african-american a ni$$r. what pisses me off is that amazon would never sell a shirt that says spic, jewboy, wetback, ni$$er, slant-eye, or something like that. but because it's just a slur against white people, it's all good...

you have a point. i'm never sure how offended to get. sometimes i feel like it's okay to laugh off stuff like that, however, i think people shouldn't be allowed to crack on one race while not being able to do the same to other races. i would agree that everyone needs to lighten up a bit. prob including me.

People get offended when it hits close to home. Most white people arent offended by 'Honky' becaiuse most white people arent vulgar illiterate rednecks, so its not a very good insult. Please don't construe what I said just now into anything more than what I actually said; I'm definitly not saying that other ethnic groups who are offended by certain slurs are those things.
I'm guessing as far as racial slurs go, what offends white people is different than minorities. If someone on teh street called me a cracker, I'd be like, "and? so what?"

i could care less if someone called me Honky. i would wear that shirt. i saw a t-shirt that said "crazy white girl" and thought about buying it. wtf, people are too sensitive, too into political correctness crap.
and since we're on it, i cannot stand when people say, "he's a colored guy." what ta hell does that mean? aren't we all colored, unless we are transparent? :P
ah, feels good to get that out. ;)

my only point is this: shouldn't i as a white person be afforded the same respect, courtesy, and the same rights as a minority? why should i, as a white person, be exempt from the standards which have been set, rightly so (and a bit late), for other nationalities and races?
edit: would you buy it if it said "crazy white cracker"?

if you mean a cracker as a hacker then sure, i wouldn't mind wearing a T like that.
i guess i am not as uptight as some people. i want to be respected but i can chill about things that aren't really supposed to be taken seriously too.

Yeah... my Mom used to tell me the stories about her childhood where she used to sneak sips from the "White Only" fountain because she didn't want to drink "Colored Water" (Kids do the darndest things... :hihi: ). :D
i know that is where that language came from. my grandparents say it every now and then to which i say, "g'pa we are colored, too" :P

I'd wear a shirt that said Crazy White Cracker. That would be funny. I'm all for anything like that.

to me, it's not a big deal.
i don't think "racial" insults have much impact against members of a racial majority who are not discriminated against (ie, a majority that is not in a situation like aphartide), because it's like "who cares?"
in addition, i knew plenty of people in my redneck hometown who were more than happy to wear "redneck" t-shirts, have "redneck" bumper stickers on their jacked-up pickup trucks, etc. basically, they thought it made them cool

like i said, i'm divided on this. when df said, "What if the shirt said..."Honky if you love Whitey"." that was funny as heck. i don't care if he says that because there's an established relationship and it's in context.
i just don't think corporations should make money off of creating shirts with racial slurs on them. maybe it's because of my job situation. in my job, if you're white and male, good luck getting promoted, especially to a high level position. in meetings, if there is a racial or sexist joke, it's about white males. i personally didn't get a job for which i was more than qualified because they opted to go for a diversity (female) candidate that was far less qualified. having said this, i would be the first to admit that minorities and woman have gotten screwed out of promotions because of their race and gender. that sucks! however, i didn't do it and shouldn't pay the price.
what does this have to do with a simple t-shirt which i actually find pretty funny? i believe that if you condone this kind of thing, it will end up biting you in the a$$. Just look at former Ford Motor Co. Chief Executive Jacques Nasser's comment "I do not like the sea of white faces in the audience..." Because he followed up his comments with initiatives to get rid of older white males, Ford was sued and had to pay millions of dollars to men that were either fired or denied promotion based on their race and gender.
i wish you knew me and could tell that i'm not some politically-correct uptight a$$hole that doesn't have a sense of humor. if you did, this post would come off as a lot less angry and more musing.
edit: i just re-read this thread and especially the part about df's mom sneaking water from the white fountain. that makes me so mad! it's hard for me to imagine a society that was that cruel. how mean can you get? it's fu$&ing water! why would they feel compelled to segregate a damn water fountain??? sigh...i guess the only thing our generation can do about it is make sure it never happens again, to anybody.

well, i'm not sure HOW offensive this word was supposed to be, but i'm just kinda curious... how come it's okay for Jeff Foxworthy to get a rather nice chunk of cash making fun of "rednecks", but the reviews for this shirt are making accusations of racism left and right? just seems like people are rather particular over their terminology... like, it's okay to call people on the jerry springer show poor white trailer trash, but not okay to use a similar term with minorities. *shrug* people are too sensitive...

i think there is difference between the terms redneck and white trash and the terms honkey and cracker. when someone is called a redneck or white trash, their socioeconomic status is being challenged and degraded. when someone is called a cracker or honkey, the monicker is applied simply because of their race. is one better than the other? that's your call. but i do believe there is a difference and am more disturbed, maybe wrongly so, by the latter case.
so...honkey if you like crackers....lol
