i was looking for ideas to cook the bird this year. seems the in thing is to soak the bird in a brine mixture. anyone try this? is it worth the effort.

I want to try a turducken...they debone a chicken, stuff it inside a deboned duck, and then stick that inside a deboned turkey... It sounds like overkill, but i heard its the juciest thing this side of hot girls thigh...

I"ve actually had "birds" cooked that way..it was tasty-but the flavor of the duck really seemed a bit overpowering..

My mum does this every year... the night before, she GETS a huge container (sometimes she uses a plastic container, a few times we've used the sink, after a thorough cleaning of course!) that she fills up with the bird, and lots and lots of salt water. she lets it soak all night, and cooks it the next day, basting it throughout. She swears that it's what makes her turkeys so juicy and yummy... and i have no complaints! Nothing beats a mom's cooking!! (sayeth the poor college student that thinks mac and cheese is an elaborate meal!) :D
edit: oops! mum is definitely not a container...

This year, its just me and the kids for Thanksgiving, so to avoid alot of leftovers, I got one of those little turkey breast roasts. I want to try the brining method eventually, but I will just probably roast it like I usually do with butter, salt & pepper and poultry seasoning.

Yeah, brining a turkey is definitely a good way to make it. We have done it that way a couple of times, used an injector to get the brine under the skin.
Other than that, you can always cajun it....taste good. Usually the fryer will have a description of the cooking equation. Just remember that there is a good chance of causing a fire, so be careful.
As for the Turducken, it takes 16 hours to cook. I just got the recipie for it the other day, but I couldnt find it.

I don't know if I'm in the minority on this, but I like ham for Thanksgiving better than turkey.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....
Cajun style, deep fried....
Once you've had a turkey cooked this way, you'll never bake another one. Inject it with cajun marinade, rub the outside with seasoned salt, deep fry for 3 1/2 minutes per pound @ 325 degrees. Voila, the best turkey you've ever had in under an hour.
On a related topic, I see that Popeye's chicken is selling pre-cooked, deep fried cajun turkeys... They're heat-and-eat though, so I don't know how they would compare to one cooked yourself... The turkey fryers are really cheap now, too. I saw one in the sportsman's guide (http://www.sportsmansguide.com) for under $30 for the burner, pot and accessories...
