Well I don't know if this is exactly the right forum to be posting in, but if it's not.. sorry.

anyways..
My friend is stuck on dial up and wanted to switch to DSL, but he was just hit with some bad luck.. he is 18800 feet from the nearest CO and can't get normal DSL... he WOULD get cable, but his apartment complex was stupid and got themselves locked in a contract with some stupid cable company that doesn't offer cable modem.

He thought his only 2 options were dial up and satellite.. (which was just way too expensive).. well I tried to prove him wrong and get him some kind of high speed internet access, and found out he can get iDSL, which is just like ISDN i guess.. but is capped at 144up/144down which is still better than his dial-up..

all the places he checked run about 100 bux/mo and have like 500 setup fees.. pretty stupid if you ask me.. but hey, it's all for the money.

Anyways, he needs to either get a router from them (which will be like another 300 dollars) or he can get his own.

If anyone has an Efficient Network 5871 or a Netopia R3100 lying around or know someone how had idsl/isdn and doesn't need it anymore, please let me know.

Also, if anyone knows anything about IDSL (other than saying "stick with dial-up") please let me know.. he pretty much wants a faster connection, even though it's not THAT much faster.. it still is.. he's just hoping he can play counterstrike.. heh..

Anyways, any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks a bunch.

never heard of iDSL. who is the provider?
Sounds pretty lousy for the amount of money he's oging to be paying...

We had a similar problem in our apartment building last year and we got together and split a fractional T1, but some kid worked for a company that provided the equiptment. but you might check that out rather than iDSL for the speed of ISDN and the price of 1.5 megabit DSL :)

iDSL uses the same technology as ISDN, but is for people over the 13 - 15k foot mark.. the fractional T1 would be nice, but that would all depend on how many people want to go in on it.. they would have to get other people in close apartments to go in on it too, so I doubt that would work (they don't get along with the neighbors)

He hasn't told me anything about what he was doing, so he probably decided against the whole thing.. who knows though.. any help still would be appreciated.

Oh, and the provider is megapath i believe..
