View Full Version : SMTP outgoing problems under os x

Well I'm at home for the weekend and was trying to send out some mail on my ibook. Its with my gotapex account and the receiving is no problem. But sending is another story. My parents are using dslextreme for dialup access and the smtp server is smtp.dslextreme.com. So I entered that in for the Mail program in X and it refused to send. I tested by using outlook express under xp and everything seems fine. . . any clues to what I might be doing wrong? I guess I could try out entourage, but I really like the spam filter on Mail, its so damn good.

Having trouble sending Mail under Jaguar? Here's how to fix it:
1. Open a new Terminal window
2. Type in "hostname" and write down the hostname it gives you.
2. Type in "cd /etc"
3. Type in "sudo pico hostconfig"
4. Change "HOSTNAME=-AUTOMATIC-" to "HOSTNAME=yourhostname", where yourhostname is the hostname which you found in step two.
5. Restart your mac.

Didn't work, I still get this error: The server "smtp.dslextreme.com" can not be contacted on port 25." BTW, I also have a .mac accounted and tried using the .mac smtp server with the same error. This is really weird. Works fine at my place in san diego on roadrunner cable, but somehow it doesn't like dialup or something. I don't think the isp is blocking port 25 since I can use the smtp on outlook express.

>try the mac stmp.
>reset the router.
>change the port number.
>check your router (port forwarding) and OS netwrok setting.
This happened to me awhile back when .mac was still free. Play with the settings. Lot of people have been have trouble this past week so hopefully it's temporary.

Thanks for the tips verve but I figured it out. . . and man oh man is it pissing me off how stupid of a problem. I found this http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20020924060715716
And what do you know, I somehow had a space before and after the addy, so of course it didn't like it, but now its fixed. Good god, such a stupid lil' oversight and mail.app no likey. . . hehe.

yeah, it's always the little things.
My friend was unable to connect to the internet. She kept on bugging me to look at it. So i checked all the settings on her computer (win ME)which were fine, then i go to the switch to see if it registers her, then I'm all over the router settings. Still nothing. So i'm thinking maybe her cable is jacked. End up borrowing a reader for it. so i move her computer away from the wall and notice that she didn't plug in the damn ethernet cable all the way! Plug it in so that it snaps and bam the net is up and running. I wasted so much time on such a simple solution. Really ticked me off.
