View Full Version : Yet another file-sharing debate
As I write this, I'm downloading a movie. I hope to watch it on my computer tonight. It's not yet out in theaters, but when it does come out I plan to see it on the big screen as well. And when it comes out on DVD, I'll be buying a copy.
So. The question.
The movie studio will be getting my money (twice) in spite of the fact that I'm downloading this movie. Why is what I'm doing llegal?

I guess because in a file sharing situation, you can be part of the propagation process and maybe people who watch the movie they download from you do not have the intention of watching it in the theatre or buying the DVD later on...
or something like it, what movie you getting :P ?

by watching the movie that you dled from the net, you are breaking the law by being part of the distribution of a copyrighted work not intended for current public release. I think its totally lame, but i am only the consumer, so my opinion doesnt count

It's illegal because you're not paying for THIS viewing of the movie. It doesn't matter if you plan on paying for other viewings in the future.
wow, you must have wanted pretty badly to see "barbie builds her dream home" :hihi:

I thought the new debbie does was a play, not a movie. :P
Seriously though... I agree with Napoleon54. How is this different from stuffing a friend in the trunk to go to a drive-in. Techincally, they're still getting money from you...

i've seen a couple pre-releases... they'd have to pay ME to sit for 2 hours and watch those crappy quality videos.
Its illegal, like speeding is illegal, but not immoral, like speeding is not immoral.

I felt the same way about Lord of the Rings last year. I went to the theatre and paid to see the movie but enjoyed it so much I needed a copy at home to hold me over until the DVD came out, which I purchased. Yeah, what I did was against the law but they did get paid, just like in your example, so I don't feel bad about it at all.
