The title says it all, but just to reiterate... Does anyone know the best streaming MP3 server software?
I'm looking for either
1) a complete package suite or..
2) source code that I can install into the rest of my site... preferably in ASP or PHP.
And if there is no BEST, then does anyone have any advice on what features I should look for in my hunt?
Thank in advance.

There's SHOUTcast for both Windows and Unix variants at http://www.shoutcast.com/download/serve.phtml#scdownload
Here's a listing of programs for Windows http://www.mp3machine.com/win/STREAMING/
Here's a listing of programs for Linux http://www.mp3machine.com/linux/STREAMING_AUDIO/

Cool, thanks for the help.
Though this gets me started, I was wondering if there was something out there a little more than just streaming a set playlist.
Is there a way to have a list of all my mp3s listed in a browser or the player(winamp) browser, click on the file, and have it stream at that point? That way I can stream/listen to the songs I want to hear, and not to a set playlist.
Thanks.

Here's another one called RIMPS http://rimps.sourceforge.net/
From the website: RIMPS is a web-based frontend, written in PHP, to make Apache an MP3 and Ogg server. It's complete with searching, individual song playing, and playlist creation. Think: a personal mp3.com of your own MP3s, plus playlists!
This one is called OTTO http://www.cardhouse.com/otto/
From the website: otto is a web based mp3 database and jukebox which can gracefully organize a very large number of albums. it is suitable for home or office workgroup use, or as an interface to a streaming internet 'radio' station.
otto is written in perl. it requires perl5, mysql, the DBI and DBD::mysql perl modules (and a few others), and apache. mod_perl is optional. otto runs under linux and could easily be ported to other versions of unix. mpg123 or icecast are used to play or stream your music

Check out Andromeda.
It's $35 but there's a free trial of it
http://www.turnstyle.com/andromeda/
Seems like a good match for what you want. ASP and PHP versions available. Plus it's optimized to display on handhelds if you wanted to control it through a wireless IPAQ. :)
I don't have any affiliation with them or anything, I was just looking for the same thing a few months ago. Hope this helps!

Hmm, I think this is something I could code. I already have something I built in ASP to upload to and retrieve files from a defined folder. All I would need is to know how to get an mp3 file to stream. Any ideas where I can do research on this?
(out googling now...)

Thanks
My mp3's were a mess, I was playing with php/mysq and had a lot of time on my hands... i gradually built that thing up, and add to the program every once in a while.
It works beautifully but the code is pretty dirty. I haven't had time but i was thinking of rewriting the code and releasing it under the gnu license.

I found one project that was generous enough to release its ASP source code..
