Why isn't every patch cable wired as a crossover?

It just seems so inefficient to need both types of cables in this world. If you could just control send/receive wires on routers, hubs and switches via software of some sort, you wouldn't need xovers for one link up, regular patch cables for another.

Doing it by software would make things slower
