So my dad has a really extensive collection of rare cds he collects adn wants to put them on his computer in mp3. He's not exactly mr. computer savvy so I don't know what program to give him since i've used programs like EAC with LAME before. Are there any simple programs, sort of point and click, interactive liek EZ CD Creator that lets you rip cds to mp3?

Before they were bought by Real.com, I used Audio Catalyst a lot, & it worked really well. Give it a try - http://www.xingtech.com/

I'm a fan of CDex. It's an open-source project hosted on Sourceforge. Has all the normal goodies, plus it's free!

Audiograbber with LAME encoder.

LAME is the best encoder for mp3's.

For absolute stupid easy go with musicmatch jukebox 7 its almost as easy as itunes. Quality is decent. But if quality is priority, definitely use the lame encoder.

Is Audiograbber free? I remember I used to use that a long time ago, but it seemed like I was restricted somehow unless I paid for it. I might be wrong or it might have changed.

Just as a side note, CDex also uses Lame (and about 18 other encoders, including wma and ogg)

I used to use Zlurp (http://www.zlurp.com) but they haven't updated the thing in almost 2 years.

You can't get much simpler than this thing.

Also, on all the programs mentioned above..do they read the disc name from a CD Database? Typing in track names and artist names is a bitch :)

I know CDex does, and I'm pretty sure that AudioGrabber did when I used it years ago. I'm sure that they all do by now. The only time I've had a problem was when I bought a CD the day it came out and it wasn't in the database yet.

One thing to look for is that the CDDB is not always correct.

I've had a few situations where the record label reissued a CD under the same catalog number with a different track listing, and the titles and names were all wrong.
