Hey Yall,
Just built a computer for my friend but wanted to OC it a bit. Can you guys give me some tips. I'm SO confused w/ what I should do. The mobo is so complex w/ OCing options... (for me it is) Could you guys help me out?
alrighty.. here's the specs
AMD T-bred 2400+ (266)
512 Corsair XMS DDR400 CL2 (1 stick)
Asus A7N8X nForce2 Mobo (deluxe)
and on the side: Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9700 Pro
There's so many numbers!!! what should I do?
Should I begin w/ try to get the CPU to 333FSB? I know that my RAM and mobo should accomodate that, but is it possible to hit that w/ a LOCKED CPU? If so, how do I do that?
Thanks a bunch

you will be able to oC the FSB with no problem.. locked processor or not.. You won't, however be able to step up the processor speed itself.. when I say that I don't mean that by uping the FSB the processor won't speed up, because it will.. and it will be very noticable.. But, until you unlock the processor you won't be able to actually change the core speed.. confusing, yet not..
I don't have too much experience with oC'ing, but the little bit I do have is enough for me.. If i learn too much, I'll end up blowing my mobo and processor up.. heh..
Just make sure you have adequate cooling because as I'm sure you know AMDs run HOT!! just leaving the HSF off for a few seconds while powered is enough to ruin a processor.. heh learned that one the hard way.. just look up some reviews of the board and I'm sure they have an in depth overclocking review as well.. that's what I did with my board and got my FSB running smoothly and stable..
hope this helped.

Also check out overclockers.com (http://www.overclockers.com/) punch in what you have and see what others have to say...

When I 1st started to oc my rig, I read various forums to look for trends. I than just copied what others were doing. With Pentiums it was easy. Just raise and lower the FSB and adjust RAM timing and Voltages.
AMDs have some different setting but just find some people with the same rig and copy their methods. Your results may be different but the steps to get there are the same. I havent owned an AMD system yet but I'm interested in playing with those new 64 chips when they hit.
Let us know how it goes and always take your time and watch your temps.
Nice equipment BTW.

If I was you I wouldnt OC your friends PC unless you know exactly what you are doing. It is soo easy to screw something up. Even if you get a guide on how to do it you still wont have the backround to troubleshoot it if something goes wrong. Also its been my experience that you could jeapordize your friendship if you burn up his processor or fry his motherboard and dont have the money to replace the parts.
Practice/learn on your system then help your friend do his system.

dood with them specs i wouldnt even bother with overclocking ... thats alot of expensive equipment .... like i always say dont fix it if it aint broke :p

Well I guess I feel like it's a waste for me buying that RAM if I don't OC w/ it. I should have just bought some regular pc2700 cl 2.5 ram then ya know?

well, if your mobo is capable of ASYNCHRONOUS speeds, you should be fine (overclocked RAM speeds, default CPU speeds)
He would not be ocing his ram if its rated at the speed he is adjusting the Memory frequency for. His MB supports Async memory frequencies so this should not be a problme at all.
Pic of memory timings (http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/motherboards/roundups/2002/Q4/nForce2/asus/memfrequency.jpg)
The reason I pointed that out is because I wanted him to understand he WILL NOT be putting anything out of spec if he just adjusts his Memory frequencies to the appropriate one for 333.

Don't forget nForce2 mobos like the memory and cpu in sync.

SO then to get the most out of my RAM... i should set the timings to "aggressive" and that's it?
