:bandit: I want to upgrade my video card and was wondering what would work the best. I have a AGP 2x with an AMD k6-2 processor. Would a GeForce4 ti 4600 be too much?

Yes because your CPU becomes your bottle neck! Save enough $$$ and upgrade the whole system. BTW the R9500Pro looks pretty good.

:bandit: Wouldnt I run into the same problem or does the Radeon 9500 Pro work better with 2x than the Geforce4? I was reading a description of the 9500 Pro and it says it needs to be connected directly to the CPU's internal power source. Is this simple to do? Will there be a connection or do you need to wire it?

An AMD k6-2 isn't a fast machine. Even with a card like the 9500 or Ti4600, you're machine will still only go so far.
I just bought a Ti4200 with 128mb myself. I can't wait to test it.

:bandit: I don't even know what my original video card is. I have a mid-90's compaq that came originally with either 64 or 96 memory, which is now up to its rated max of 384. I am adding a DVD+R and thought a good video card would help take some strain off the main system. Maybe I need to upgrade the motherboard too.

1. The Ti4200 is a big card....I don't know if it would fit on your ss7 board.

2. I had a KT133a board, and for some reason, the ti4200 didn't want to work with my AGP board. Kinda sucked....but I tested it on a friend's motherboard (KT266) and I got a new motherboard (KT400) the card works fine. So yeah...the GF4 might not want to play nice with your ss7.

basically what they are teling you is that you need a new cpu/motherboard combo to take advantage of what the geforce 4 can offer you. its like this: if you buy the best exhaust system possible for your car, but you have a really small engine that doesnt produce alot of horsepower, you arent going to really going to feel the effect of the exhaust. you are better off upgrading the engine. know what i mean?

:bandit: I guess I was trying to turn my VW Bug into a Porsche. I need to start all over from the motherboard up. Thanks for the help! Perhaps I'll have some more questions later as I try to create a whole new system.I understand ASUS makes some nice boards. Probably want an Anthlon XP processor...

Well...I have the ASUS a7v8x (KT400) with a 1600+. It runs really well so far.
