View Full Version : School district bans holiday decorations
YONKERS, New York (AP) -- Public schools in this New York City suburb have banned decorations specific to one holiday, including Christmas trees and Hanukkah menorahs.
Interim Superintendent Angelo Petrone directed officials last week to remove all decorations that go beyond a generic "Happy Holidays" or "Season's Greetings."
Holiday assemblies featuring religious songs, poems and reports on holidays will still be permitted, district spokesman Eric Schoen said.
Marla Hurban, a member of the Yonkers PTA Council, said teachers scrapped lesson plans involving holiday decorations and took down bulletin boards loaded with children's artwork.
When word of the order began to spread, "anybody who heard it thought it was a joke at first," said Amanda Pendleton, who has a daughter in fifth grade. "Then they had to literally tear everything off the walls."

Someone please tell me - how does this benefit our kids? I think I may just send Interim Superintendent Petrone a nasty email.

This is stupid:

So you can't have Christmas or Hanukkah decorations, but you can sing songs that some would be all about Jesus.
Pretty lame.

If they have banned all decorations that are specific to ONE holiday does that mean no Turkeys and Pilgrims at THanksgiving, No dragons on Chinese New Year, NO Four Leaf clovers and Laupercons on St. Patricks day, no Ghost, zombies, candy, witches, and spiders for Halloween, no posters of Martin Luther King on his day, no pictures of dead presidents on President's day (including pictures of Washington and Lincoln on their days), No hearts on Valintine's day.... this is stupid....and what about Black History month... no more picture of famous black people....great.

I think they are coming from more of a religious standpoint. Not wanting to offend other religions and all. Still stupid.

Now, now. Don't tell me I have to explain the obvious as I would have to do on some other boards.

don't you know, you can be religious, but you can't support anything related to paganism. then you are different and the MIB's will start watching you, and eventually you will be linked to Afganastan.
So much for tolerance and diversity. And as its been pointed out, this lame move isn't even consistent.
Christmas trees and Hanukkah are now the same holiday?
Oh well at least that fat b@stard Santa wasn't banned this year in Kensington.

Hmmmm... I thought the idea was to tollerate all, not prohibit the popular ones. Silly me.

If they're trying to get rid of the religious aspect, why are they keeping the songs. Anyways, Christmas has gotten so commercialized that even I don't consider it a religious holiday anymore.
