I hooked up my Gigafast 4 port switch, drilled holes in the wall, mounted it, plugged stuff in, and the thing hisses like a mofo!
I mean it's just SSSSSSSSSSsssssssssSSSSSSSSSSSsssssssssssssSSSSSSSSSSSS........
:(
Is this normal?

...when I used my switch (8port somebrand). I was really irritated with the noise it produced, sitting on top of my near-silent computer. So, I later bought a wireless router Netgear314, and it hisses too! (not as loud though). It only does it when a computer is connected to it, not when just on, but not activated.
I can't think of a good reason why an object with no moving parts would hiss...

the only reason i could think is that it has a small fan in it or something. maybe you could take it apart and unplug it.

nope no small fan, i've taken it apart before (was gonna mod it inside my comp).
But my switch still hisses when there's no cables plugged in except the power cable. I have it muffled by my backpack right now, but this sucks.

Yeah, there's this mysterious black rectangular chip thing. No labels, plasticky finish. Biggest thingymabob on the PCB.

Why does my router hiss at me? (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/support/hissing.htm)

Yep, it's the DC converter. I made one of these things once in a lab using coils of wire wrapped around a ferrite core - the thing hissed like a mofo! Made my ears hurt! :D
