in all honesty, i never liked the idea of paying to join a club just to meet a bunch of people and such...i see it as just paying to have friends. during my first year at ucla, i lived in a dorm that faced "frat row." with their loud weekly parties and their usual nightly ruckus, they were the bane of the collegiate existence.
but, frats have their up sides. there is a sense of brotherhood that can be very well worth your money. also, there's the chance to network...for after you graduate. frat brothers look out for one another...this can be especially helpful in an economy like this.

Kappa Sigma...or at least back in the day I was. I was actually anti-fraternity for a long time. I became friends with a bunch of the guys in the fraternity before I joined.

The frats at UCSD are a joke. They don't even have a frathouse. Does yours? If they do, and there is a yearly toga party, then I say its cool.

well my frat doesnt have a frat house, b/c in riverside they have a law that says, there cant be 6 or more women with different last names living in the same house.... to prevent whore houses, so they cant have sorority houses, and to be fair, no frat houses either, but my frat is dry, and we are a service frat, so we dont go and throw big paries every weekend..... offically, but i think Alpha Phi Omega is differnt than the other frats, its a step down b/c we dont hav hazing, but it has been fun and like cornmonkey said, there is alot of brotherhood, and i have made friends that i would call family

Actually Brother ZrEo0 is right in some of what he says, Alpha Phi Omega is not a social frat it is a service frat. We are not allowed to have a frat house because it is forbidden by our National Bylaws. ALpha Phi Omega basically servces four area's of service, To the Nation, to the Community, to the Campus and to the Fraternity itself. Under our cardinal principals of Leadership, Friendship and Service young men and women learn how to be leaders and how to give back to the community around them. Some of the services that ALpha Phi Omega does include Habitat for Humanity, Project Food (feeding the needy), Street clean up, and many other wonderful services.
This is not one of those frat you pay like 300 bucks a month to join. Alpha Phi Omega, while it is mainly a service frat does have a social aspect to it. We have events that promote the brotherhood that goes along with being a brother in a frat. All in all it is a good frat and trust me it is not like the ones you see in movies.
Hey ZrEoO.....if you just crossed over that would mean you are a brother of the Sigma pledge class :)

My friends and I never saw the benefits that outweighed the hazing that went along with pledging. Nor did we need Greek letters on our chests to go out, get drunk and act like buffoons (we did that while wearing our rugby jerseys). :D
It's funny, too. I always wondered how many of the Greeks actually learned the Greek alphabet when it seemed they had a pretty difficult time with English.

In the spirit of political correctness, use of the term "Greeks" refers to fraternity and sorority members and is in no way meant as a disparaging remark to Greek nationals or anyone of Greek heritage. (I see how touchy some people have been recently.) ;)

If you wanna learn the Greek alphabet, become a math major. Jeez, by senior year everything I wrote in Math comprised mostly of Greek letters.

I know sometimes I feel the same way about Social frats, but they hepls us out a lot at times. Each Social frat has a national cause that they spend a lot of time raising money or awareness for. Not all frats are about drinking hazing and what not.
In Alpha Phi Omega there is absolutely NO hazing. You may think that is BS but first Alpha Phi Omega is not a greek or social frat. It is a Service frat. Unless of course you think that requiring our pledges to do roughly 20 hours or so of community service is hazing.
For those non frat people out there, for most the main issue is not buying your friends... it's Brotherhood. There are traditions and rituals that all frats have that unless you ever rushed and joined one you will never fully understand. The hazing for some greek and Asian Greek frats is harsh and I would never want to do it, but those who do get some benefit from it and the brotherhood they do find and the networking they are able to do is most likely worth their money.
Of course you don't need greek letters to go out and act like an ahole.... many people do that already.

my roomate told me he was in a frat, he didnt tell me anything about it when i joined, and i only went to one info event, b/c i was busy the other nights, so i jumped in not knowing anything, at first i thought it was just another club, and when we got our bigs and we started to do stuff with each other we became family, now that i have finished pledging, it has been a great experence.

As far as APO is concerned let me freak you out a bit. I know your are from Alpha Delta Theta, I know that your chapter's president is DJ, Membership VP is Jen and that your Pledge mom was Karen. I know that you had your installs last friday in Redlands at amansion across from Pharoh's lost kingdom. I know it cost $27 to attend and that it was outside.
I know that your Advisors are Ray, Dr. Sims, Father martin, and Tracy lew I believe if they are all still there. I know that you meet in Bourns B118. ANd I know you are part of the Sigma Class.
The funny thing is that I know all these stuff because I am an Alumni from ALpha Delta Theta chapter. Iota Class.

what i don't get about APhiO is why you have to PAY to do community service? why not just join some campus group or go to some soup kitchen on your own for free?
TofuNinja

You could do that if you wish. However the fees are nominal very low at our chapter. On the flip side because we are such a big organization we can do other services that you may not beable to do alone. We hold casino nights and talent shows with all profits going towards local charities. What makes us different from a service club is tradition. ZrEoO and I have been through the exact same ritual, pledge period and whatnot. Brotherhood is the key issue. I have never met Brother Zreo0 in person but if he asked me to do him a favor that is within reason of me doing I'd do it.
Service or social we are still a Frat. And as a frat there are operation costs.

Well, I was in a Greek social frat back in the day. I never bought the argument of "buying friends". They have to invite you to pledge, and they do this if you have common interests and think you'll get along. It's not like you throw down cash and you have new friends. And it worked out, my best buds to this day were fraternity brothers.
Plus the money goes for housing and social. Heck, I more than made up for the social fee in beer. :D

I hate social frats. I think of them as a way to buy friends. Frat boys are always the same. Very lame.
