BOSTON -- Cardinal Bernard Law will offer his resignation when he meets with Pope John Paul II on Friday, according to an international news agency.

"I cannot confirm this report that Law has offered his resignation. But, in a way, it does not make a great deal of difference because he has not met with the pope, and that meeting is scheduled to take place tomorrow," National Catholic Reporter spokesman John Allen said. "It is up to the pope to decide whether or not to accept his resignation or ask for a resignation. There are some indications, and I emphasize that they are merely indications, that they may be moving in that direction. Some of my Vatican sources indicated that there may be movement in that direction, given the letter from 58 of Law's priests."

Ok, so it's not offical, but it's a step in the right directions for these disgusting people to be held accountable.

Meanwhile, Law reportedly has been subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury looking into possible crimes by church officials who supervised priests accused of child sexual abuse.

BOSTON -- Cardinal Bernard Law, under intense fire in a church sex abuse scandal, resigned Friday as Boston archbishop, the Vatican announced.

The Vatican said Pope John Paul II had accepted the resignation after the two men held talks Friday morning. The pope named Bishop Richard Lennon an auxiliary bishop in Boston, to run the diocese temporarily.

"I am profoundly grateful to the Holy Father for having accepted my resignation as Archbishop of Boston," Law said in a written statement released by the Vatican.

"It is my fervent prayer that this action may help the archdiocese of Boston to experience the healing, reconciliation and unity which are so desperately needed."

"To all those who have suffered from my shortcomings and mistakes, I both apologize and from them beg forgiveness."

Abuse victims, lay members and even some priests had intensified calls for Law to resign after 18 years at the helm of the Boston archdiocese, as more cases of sordid conduct by priests unfolded from the release of church files.

next up, maybe they will look into Bishop Mahonry..

well if these god fearing men would stand up to their collegues and turn this rat bastige people, more people would have a positive view of these "men of the cloth". however, they don't. their "upper-management" decieves the public and send these mentally ill men to other places, quiet places, where they can have yet more sex with childern. I feel this way about any person who acts out their sick fantasies onto a young, probably, innocent child. Rabbi does it? Trial. Priest does it? Trial.

Why do they instantly become above the law? Because they are "spirtual leaders"? Screw that.

Obby - The reason I pick on these men is because of their actions to cover up these men. Had they done the correct thing, turning them over to the authorities, I would *gasp* be praising them. They would be more respectable by, not only me, but most people, thus portraying them in a extremely positive light, which i hear is a good thing. :)

I certainly agree that these guys should be punished-to the highest degree of the law..and as far as the others knowing enough to turn in the offenders-maybe THEY AREN'T EVEN AWARE of what's going on..sounds namby pamby but think about it..the ones who are clueless to the sexual misconduct are usually the ones who are so enlightened by the priesthood/rabbihood etc that they are only see the good in people..they worship the lord with all their heart, and their entire lives are DEVOTED to prayer and service..they are so wrapped up in their OWN little perfect holy worlds that they don't see the demon in their "brothers" of the cloth..follow me here? How many times have you seen a crime taking place-and didn't report it? See a mother in a store slap her kid for eating grapes while shopping-that can be construed as child abuse..did you report it? no. See a person back into another car accidently in a parking lot, and not leave a note? That's hit and run. Did you report it? probably not. Do you know any drug users? Report them? Probably not..Come on let's be realistic. Sometimes it's just best to mind your own business..A priest hears of another priest supposedly engaging in these kinds of activities, and goes to report it to higher ups, he is told it's hear say, unauthenticated, without reports filed by the child and their family, now the priest who made the report is construed as a "trouble maker"..and his life is now made hell..while the offender gets away with murder..this isn't just the priesthood-this is ANY JOB. Don't MOST executives of corporations HIDE activities like this? the gambling, crossdressing, sexual misconduct, alcoholic ramblings of companies are usually not broadcost to the world unless someone sues..the same goes for the catholic church...that in itself is one of the biggest corporations in the world.

IMO - If they are that caught up that they don't see any "demon" in a person, I don't think they are looking hard enough, or they are dillusional.
A mother reprimanding her child for stealing a grape at a supermarket is acceptable. A mother Smacking said child's butt is acceptable. A mother knocking her kid around like a rag-doll, will soon meet me. I don't report drug user's who only hurt themseleves. (i've never seen a hit-n-run in any form, so I can't say what I would so, sorry =\)

Trouble-makers of that kind are ok by me. If other priest's don't see it going on, that's fine, because I honestly don't know how much interaction they have with each as far as knowing their personal lives, but I'm sure that when parent's find out they report to the archdioses and right then, it is a criminal investigation, I say. Not the Bishop sending this person away to work with more childern in another state or even another country, that's foolhardy and utterly disgusting.

Corporations get caught in the end. Look at what this year has shown us about corporations. But the difference is, these Bishops and Cardnials <sp?> continued, of their own free will, to let these men have sex with childern. What are they thinking that Grown men having sex with childern is acceptable, in any way shape or form? I shudder at that thought.
