but I work in Burbank...and I really do not enjoy walking into a McDonald's TWO miles off the I-5, and not being able to order because they can't understand me. Nor can I understand the CHRISTMAS MUSIC because it is all in FREAKING SPANISH!

I mean, I don't mind other nationalities being here at all, nor do I have any problems with foreigners, but I do have issues with people not able to speak the language of the country they live in!

It's El Nuggets de Pollo or something like that. That is a customer service issue if they can't speak english unless you were the only non spanish speaker to go into that place.....

Anyone who works in a job that preforms any kind of service that they have to communicate with another human should have to speak the predominate language of the country. I would have given up and asked for the manager, personally, and make his/her ass take my mother****ing order, since it's their goddamn fault for hiring the person.

ya i feel ya. true, america doesn't have an official language per se, but i would expect workers at all-american restaurant like mc d's to be able to speak english. i think it has to do with the location of the place in a dominately hispanic neighborhood. now u know to go learn the spanish word for manager/boss (which is el director or el jefe). they'll understand that then! :P

Yeah, I had a similiar experience up in Long Beach when I was stopping for food on my way to the Aquarium. Really freaking pissed me off, but I finally got my order in and got my food. I just stop patronizing places like that or if its somewhere I have to go, tell them no, I dont need help until an english speaker comes up to me.

This reminds me of a time I was walking out of a Wal-Mart and this little mexican boy comes running out from behind two vans and he starts yelling at me.

"alsdkjfasdfkj pins asldkjfa sasdfasdj Mr. asldkfa sdalsdkjf asd help old people asldkf aasldkjfalksda asldkjf"

I say that he was holding some pins but couldn't understand a darn word he was saying so I ignored him as I often ignore those stupid people who ring bells...

THen his mom pops out and says somethign that really pissed me off

"It's ok honey those people don't speak English."

I was pissed. I felt like cussing her out or something. Here she is with a son who is in third grade who can not put a sentense of english together and she says that I can't speak English?!?!?! I have more Education than her in my pinky. If only her IQ was as high as the number of men she slept with....

land of the free. you got your order. you don't like it, write a letter to mcdonalds. they get enough complaints, they'll make sure there is some english spoken. obviously works well for plenty of other people.

my favorite chinese restaurant takes phone orders, and the person who answers the phone doesn't always speak very good english. it doesn't piss me off. i don't get self-righteously indignant about "not in MY country blah blah..." this is a person on the other end of the line with a life and a story to tell, someone who has come here and has made an effort to make a living, is not on welfare, and is trying to speak english... he's here, he's selling me food, we will have to slowly and carefully repeat ourselves several times, i'm going to get the food that i order. there just isn't anything to get pissed off about. not at him, not at his restaurant, not at "his kind."

as for the christmas music... good lord, get over yourself. most of the rest of the world is happy to hear music in many languages. they like it. i rarely get to hear music in languages other than english and consider it a bit of a horizon-broadener. only americans have such an egotistical hard-on about "why doesn't everybody talk just like me?!?!?!"

tofuninja... the boy was speaking english. you didn't understand him. might have been your problem. some people are just HORRIBLE at understanding anyone with even the slightest accent... generally people born and raised in very culturally homogenous settings. would you have been so raging pissed if the person had had an unintelligible southern accent, or rural maine accent? or did you just see the boy, think "mexican," and get instantly pissed the minute his speech sounded a bit funny to your ears? just something to think about. also, if the boy was waving pins at you... he may have been selling them for a fundraiser for the deaf. deaf people sound funny when they talk. still self-righteously pissed?

the thing i don't get is you were ordering CHICKEN MCNUGGETS. it's not like you went in and said, "i want a sandwich with gueya and munster cheese on facoccia bread with pesto" (yes, i realize there are misspellings galore in that statement).

"chicken mcnuggets" -- it's pretty basic

Chinese restaurants are different. If it was Chinese fast food, then I would be having an issue also.

If I go to a restaurant or order from a restaurant, I expect it to take a long time. However, FAST FOOD, there is a reason I want to get in, get out, and not pay a lot. I don't want to spend 30 mins at McDonald's. I want to spend 30 minutes at Kisho (a nice japanese restaurant.)

But if you are expected to take orders quickly and repeatedly throughout the day in a fast food chain where the average serve time is under one minute (or is supposed to be), then you should be able to clearly understand English.

the mcdonald's i was at advertises a 47 second serve time...i have yet to ever see it.

I think it's neat that there are pockets of society in the US that don't speak english and yet still function (i.e. not starving). It might be slightly annoying at times, but it's not like they're hurting you.

However, if you want to look at it this way, you'll be way more successful (career wise) than those who can't speak english in the US. :o

Astualy there was a big scandle about that. The employees of the company that handled the promotion for McDonalds scammed all the prizes. They pocked the key pieces and had friends claim them. McDonalds was somewhat pissed. They spent 10 Million for new prizes to show good faith. But it was still a PR nightmare.

I wouldn't feed McDonalds food to a dog.

i read the post several times... you said some pretty mean stuff about the kid too, not just the mom.

i'm not on a high horse flaming you... i'm probing. making suggestions about other things that could have gone wrong, exploring the possibilities for you to think about, because i wasn't there and i don't know you.

so you DID understand the kid... then what's the friggin problem? you don't like the WAY he spoke... la-de-dah. language is constantly evolving, with new words, new word usages, new syntax, new style, new idioms, new pronuncations, new spellings. and how do you know how long this kid has been in this country? you try being the foreigner trying your damndest to make it in a new language for a few years before you toss judgements about... it's a very humbling experience.

as for people making assumptions... you were pissed off that she decided maybe you didn't speak english? you decided pretty quickly that this mexican woman was very uneducated. you have no idea how much education she has. so get off your high horse.

and sometimes my kid gets excited and talks funny. when people don't understand him, he's crushed. and because of his limited english skills, it's very hard to explain to him sometimes why people don't understand him. i have never done it, but i can see why a mother would tell her kid, "they just don't speak english, honey" to spare his feelings.

again, you don't like the service at a mcdonalds, don't patronize it. you want to see a change, write a letter. land o the free.

Well I think you have to also look at it another way. In my experience, with rare exceptions, when you travel in a foreign country you need to be proficient in the language there. Do people manage to get around Germany without speaking of lick of english....yes, but that is because english is taught to all Germans in the University. (Equivalent of our high school) What would happen if no one spoke your language, you would be up sh|ts creek without a paddle.

If you watch shows like the Amazing Race, you would have seen that in some of the countries they were in they couldnt even communicate with someone to get simple directions.

I think the reason why some people have problems with non-english speakers in the US is quite simply, we are an english speaking society. However, we are also a mixing pot, and always have been. As a result, even though english is the "official" language, there are all these other languages that are alive and well and flourishing.

I dont think its necessarily bigotry, racism or anything else, to expect that when you go somewhere in your own country, you can be understood to some extent.

I dont like it when I am delayed for 20 minutes because the banker calls another bank to verify funds, gets someone who cant understand a word of english who sends her to a wrong number, and then has to call back to the first place, which was right to begin with!

Yes, the fault there lies with the hiring person for giving a non english speaker the job, but come on, if you are going to do a job like that, learn the freaking language!

I dont think people are talking about situations like Little Havana in Miami, where Cuban is spoken almost exclusively, because for the most part, the people there can speak some english. Nor do I think people are complaining about ethnic markets and the such, where the Thai lady behind the counter just stares at you and smiles and then has to grab someone else to give you your total. I think, quite simply its a matter of people being unhappy that in "normal" situations such as fast food, where they cant get themselves understood.

Yes, its annoying for both parties...especially if the non english speaker has been trying to communicate with you in englis unsuccessfully. But there comes a point when it just gets annoying to the "native" speaker and things need to be done.

Personally, I hate it when this crap happens to me. I fully admit it, and I have even told them to learn some F'ing english when they really piss me off. To which they just smiled. But, yes, not patronizing the place or writing letters is probably the best solution.

Go ahead and defend the racist comment... if it makes your day woohoo...

It amazes me how fast people defend racist statements and under your high horse ideas... I guess the next time I am watchign the news with my kids and they ask me why all the blacks are being arrested I should just say "It's because they are thugs" Or when we pass a farm and see Mexican labor just tell him all Mexicans pick fruits.. because after all I am being lazy and I don't want explain that they are working to put food on their tables so their families can eat, and that if I was in the same situation that I would do that exact same thing.... but no, they all pick fruit... great let's foster a racist Trent Lott society here.

Perhaps I assumed that she didn't have much education... maybe she has a PhD...does it really matter? you're the one obviously full of hatred here, not the boy's mother. all we know about her is that she saw you seemingly not understand her son when he was speaking english... it was fair enough for her to guess that you just didn't speak english. that's not racist, and i'm not defending a racist comment. lots of people of all colors in this country don't speak english.

from your first plus your second post, it sounds like you did understand him, but you chose to rudely not respond to him and you had plenty to say about how awful it was that his english wasn't "right," but you claim you're not upset about it.. fine, even if his fundraising was all you were upset about, if you don't want to talk to a fundraiser, all you have to do is hold up a hand in a "stop" gesture and say no thank you; ignoring a kid who simply approached you to ask a question is rude. ... i think the attitude problem here is all yours, not the kid's mother's... the mother simply gave you the benefit of the doubt in guessing that you didn't speak english rather than that you were a rude m-f'er.
