dumb rookie question- how do you "stack" coupons?

I see a lot of references to stacking coupons, some are stackable, some not etc.

Most places I've bought stuff from have a single field for promotion/coupon codes. I enter one and hit continue or next. I don't see how you can physically enter more than one code, but apparently you can, sometimes at least.

How does this stacking work?

I know that Amazon allows you to stack. If you get a gift certificate just submit the code and it gets put into your account balance which allows the money to be used at a later time. But they have two different types of GCs. Regular ones and Promo ones. You cannot stack promo GCs.

amazon, which is who the mighty jameslee http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/tongue.gif was talking about, has the 'enter another' button next to the field where you enter the code so you can stack promos and gc's.

dunno about other places?
