View Full Version : More Airline Passenger size/seating problems
http://www.msnbc.com/comics/nw.asp?vts=121320021446
In October, Virgin Atlantic Airways agreed to pay passenger Barbara Hewson the equivalent of (U.S.) $20,000 for injuries she suffered on an 11-hour flight when an obese woman sat in the seat next to her and apparently crushed part of her body. Hewson said the squashing caused a blood clot in her chest, torn leg muscles and acute sciatica, requiring her to be bedridden for a month. [BBC News, 10-21-02]
Shouldn't the obese woman pay something?

wow - the passenger was getting hurt all that time in the flight and said nothing? either she is too shy (or too stupid) to say anything at first, or its a setup. sorry, but i smell a rat.actually she didn't have to feel a thing at all for this to happen. it could have been just slightly uncomfortable during the flight, but she was too polite to say or didn't realize there could be a problem.
anyhow, blood clots during flights aren't terribly uncommon. it can be just a result of sitting in one place for that long. which is why they recommend some movement during flight on extended trips.
(why is the word "comics" in that url?)

Rush Limbaugh was talking about this about 3 weeks ago..apparently when the woman went into some lawyers office-she looked like an accident victim..she was in a wheelchair, holding a cane, looking like death warmed over..his comments were quite amusing. I think the entire plane seat situation would be solved if airlines would accomodate the comfort of ALL passengers by making the seats more roomy, instead of trying to cram 3 bazillion people onto one flight (*chaching!$$$$$$$)......

And yet, most people would pick the small seat airlines because they are able to charge half the price.

Wasn't there a case where they charged an obese person for two seats?

I think they should put warnings on the small seats.
Warning
This seat may cause blood clots when sitting next to fat people.
The airline should pay because it put someone in danger. I think if she knew she was going to sit next to the obesse one she would have paid for a diffrent flight/seat. The good news is now the airlines can sight saftey as a reason for charging fat people for the seat next to them.

Actually, you get the blood clots whether you sit next to fat people or not. It's just because you're not moving around that you get the blood clot not because the person next to you weighs more than the plane.

I say all airlines move on to "pay for your ass" pricing. The bigger your ass takes up space, the more money you pay.

On our flight back from Dallas (after thanksgiving) my wife and I got paired with a very obese man who had the aisle seat. His wife was this little 105lb petite woman. He was very considerate and stood in the rear of the plane for most of the flight back to LAX. You gotta wonder if that does anything to a plane's trim settings...
As for my worst personal airplane hell story:
On my flight back from Singapore I had an Indian woman who did not use deodorant (and I'm pretty sure she was going through her "time of the month at the same time) :puke: . I had to smell her for 12 hours. I felt so nasty and disgusting getting off that plane I had to take two showers afterward (I dodn't feel clean after just one).

heres how it works...
the more seats you stuff on a plane, the more money you make.
planes cost a FREAKIN lot of money to fly even on short flights.
Airline companies have to stay in business, so then need money to not only cover the cost of teh flight, but cover all teh labor that is involved in getting people on the plane, luggage on the plane, setting up the tickets, renting the Gates (VERY expensive), etc etc etc.
we all see how badly large airlines companies are doing right now, and some of it is they dont make enough to cover the cost of some flights.
making the seats wider wont make people fly more.
making the cheaper will.
the small seats fit me fine. if people were in good health, they would fit in the seats fin, like me. Think of it as an incentive to loose weight.
most of my flights have been fine.... even the 20hr flight back from Brasil - i had both seats on either side of me empty so i was definitely relaxing.
