I used my *switch* to share my charter cable connection, I got three separate IPs off the switch. Unfortunately, a hub is somewhat a lesser equipped beast than a switch, and many broadband ISPs frown on external switches and hubs and will give you only one IP.
So...the answer is *maybe*...prolly not though.
BTW: Performance through my netgear wireless router is about 90% what I got through my switch.

Hubs and switches don't do sharing of a connection with one ip. A router is meant to do that. A hub is slower than a switch in which it splits speed across the board while a switch is smarter in splitting speeds. If you have more than one ip number you should be able to use the hub, however a switch will be faster and even better for security reasons a router.

I didn't have to DO anything. I just plugged the cable modem into the uplink port, and the comps in ports 234, and it worked.
I got a router because when I wanted to move files between comps, It was limitted to the 1/2 of the cable modem's speed. (I suppose it was moving the files to charter before the target comp)

You have to share the connection using one of the computers if you use a Hub or a switch. A router will share a connection and assign local ips. A hub and switch are only pathways to other computers on the network. A hub will send the signal to every computer hooked to it while a switch will only send it to the address (computer) that it is meant to go to.
Best situation: Get a switch and a router. That way you don't need one of the computers to server the internet.

Well, ya. Same thing. Just one box instead of 2.
