View Full Version : What is a reliable IDE drive?

The IBM drive is going out for the second time in my server machine. I am so sick of hard drive maintenance. What is a good, reliable IDE drive? Keep in mind I leave this thing on 24/7. Also, it just needs to be big enough to store a win2k installation, all the important data is on other drives.

Thanks!

The Baracuddas are made by Seagate, and yes.. they are good. Western Digitals seem to be everyones favorite now adays. WD used to make terrible drives, now they are like what IBM used to be (Although, I have heard that the new drives that IBM came out with recently are pretty good)

I can vouch the the WD. I have 2 of them (100GB and 120GB SE). They are quiet and FAST! The drives IBM were having problems with were actually some of the fastest IBM drives when they work. I have a IBM 60GB 60gxp and it has never given me ANY problems, but I also have 2 45GB 75GXPs that are crap.

I have a 40GB IBM 60GXP and I got into problem before. Now I'm using WD 120GB SE for couples of months without any problem!

Seagate, seagate, Seagate. They are ROCk solid. The western digitals now perform better. . . but I haven't heard of them being any more reliable than they used to be.

when i first built my computer, i had a seagate and i had to RMA the thing. now i've had a quantum for the past 3 years and i've never had a problem with it. yay.

Western Digital's HDDs have really been coming along. They put so much money into R&D that their drives are really supurb now. Now if only my dad would ask them for some "Sample" drives, he works for them. A Drivezilla would ROCK!!!

I have an IBM 75gxp that I have been using for 18 months or so with no problems, that I know of anyway. I do plan on switching to WD newer 120gig SE just for the fact that it's the only IDE drive with a 8mb buffer. If you are running a server I would recommend going to a raid set up if you all ready haven't. The WD 80gig SE is on sale now at CompUSA for 89.95 free shipping, good luck...

I'm going to have to say that Seagates are really solid drives.

I've had one of my Maxtors for around 3-4 years now without any problem. And the other Maxtor for around 6-7 months without any problems.

I'm running 2 seagate barracuda IV's and I love them. I also finished making another comp with a 60gb seagate barracuda in it, they're VERY quiet.

IBM makes the fastest drives. The 120GXP and 180GXP are their best ones. Much more reliable than 75GXP. They are probably my pick for the best IDE drive available. Seagate IBM and Maxtor also have drives with 8MB cache too. IBM's drives as I said are the fastest while Seagate makes the quitest drives with fluid bearing technology.
