This is a big lawsuit against overpriced Music CDs. All you have to do is file a claim with the online form from this link...

http://www.musiccdsettlement.com/english/default.htm

The form is located here:

https://webform.musiccdsettlement.com/english/forms/questions.aspx

Everyone gets at least $5 up to $20 depending on how many claims are filed.

according to this site it's real

http://www.ag.state.nd.us/CDSettlement.html

the dot-us thing makes it a gov't page.

so the link is indeed http://www.musiccdsettlement.com/english/default.htm

still odd that info doesn't come up under whois. usually they give that out unless there's something to hide :hmm:

And they want the last four numbers in your SS#, I THINK NOT! Seems really fishy :shifty:

Called the number and spoke with someone. Sounds legit. If anyone else wants to do some more background work, the person to contact is Matt Potter and the PH. # is 507-333-4300.

I just heard a commercial on the radio for this (during Howard Stern here in San Diego). They mention the phone number and the website as described above. That's enough for me to believe this is the real deal. I filled it out but I still put 0000 for the last 4 digits of the SS#.

I can't believe people are so desperate for $5 - $20.

It's a lame law suit that benefits only the lawyers, who are the biggest beneficiaries of any class action suits.

We live in a capitalistic society where companies will charge whatever consumers are willing to pay. It's hypocritical for people to sue the companies for something they willingly participated in.

I love all deals, but I'll pass on this one.

There was a full page ad in the most recent National Geographic regarding this case and info on how to join in the class action. I've already tossed my copy of the mag, otherwise I'd post the info here.

This is actually legit. Here's another article that talks about it.

It is legit . . . there was also an ad in this week's People . . .

If I remember correctly, the total cash settlement was around $60M . . . the lawyers will take their cut . . . and then the rest will be divided among how many ever people claim. However, if so many people claim that each person would get less than $5 . . . then all the money goes to non-profit organizations that promote music literacy, etc.

I'd prefer if the non-profits did get the money . . .

And Dave . . . as to your point, the whole reason behind the lawsuit is that the recording industry did NOT abide by the Capitalist system. Capitalism is inherently competitive, and the recording industry colluded to prevent competition and keep prices artificially high. Of course, some people were willing to pay those prices, but that doesn't mean they should have had to . . .

Only 30,000 people have signed up. So $20 for me and $20 for my wife as long as the number of people stays under 2.2 Million by March 3rd. I likes.

yeah you will get 20 buks now.....but they have all your info and may try to get you on cd copy right law......I mean..if you have burnt cd's and they come to know about it(peeping into your house)...

So you're saying the Feds will use this info to storm my house and arrest me for all the pirated CDs I may have? A little paranoid, aren't we?

This offer is 100% legit. I originally didn’t sign up because I didn’t think it was really “fair”. However, our local ABC television affiliate just aired a story that not enough people have signed up to date to make this settlement happen.

I had purchased dozens of CD’s during this time (January 1, 1995 through December 22, 2000), but cassettes and vinyl albums qualify as well. You only had to have purchased a total of ONE (or more) “prerecorded music product” to qualify. And you only have to answer three yes/no questions. So if all parties involved think the settlement is “fair”… who am I to disagree?

Nija

yeah, i signed up.

catch = if too many people sign up, the money goes to non-profits in the form of CD's, if too few sign up, same basic thing happens. And under the terms of the settlement the RIAA has NOT admitted guilt, so they are still technically innocent to continue on this path that they have chosen for your wallet. If you want to know, the slashdotters and the farkers have anal-yzed these pages to death to make sure they are legit, and secure (and yes it is your last four ssn for reasons of verification (or some such))

so there you have it. Your better off just not supporting any of the major labels, and support your local up-and-coming artists, or support organizations that oppose the DMCA, and the RIAA.

From what I understand about this particular law suit, the price they charged was not the issue. They collaborated to raise prices above what they would be in a competitive environment which is most definately illegal. I think the term is a "cartel".
