hi all. got a newbie question here so don't you all flame at once 'k?
i've got some down time this coming holiday (i.e. a lot of sitting at home doing a whole lot of nothing) and was interested in playing some games. :)
i REALLY like strategy games like c&c or warcraft,... but am looking for something new. any recommendations?
thanks!

Bah...we don't flame here on the games page do we guys?
:D
Well. I hope you played Warcraft 3. It's new, but you might have included it in your statement. How about Age of Mythology?
This genre is dying quickly. The only other strategy game I know of is C&C Generals, but that's not coming out this holiday.

Here's a list of all the stratagy games that have ever come out to help give you ideas... http://www.strategyplanet.com/games/genres/realtime.shtml
As far as what's in the stores now - The 2150 games are nice. A different kind of RTS game where you really have to watch your resources carfully and not go throwing away your units in stupid battles. Its hard but a good RTS.
Anything Age of Empires or Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds.
Star Trek Armada I & II were both nice games...

StarCraft is the Best. B.Net is great, free, easy to get into a game, etc.

I played AoM a while ago...some how I couldn't get into it.
As of now, I'm playing Battle Realms with the "Winter of the Wolf" expansion.
I think its pretty sweet. This isn't exactly a brand new game. But if you haven't played it. Its pretty neat. Its a different way to play the game that's for sure. You get to ride horses and use them to carry supplies and stuff. Pretty neat! :thumb:

Buy the game, its worth it. It can be found for an inexpensive price. :)

I doubt you'll get much help here on these boards with warez/isos.
Buy the game. It's worth it.
There are some games that people SHOULD download rather than buy (since they are of crap quality aka Daikatana, Lord of the Rings, etc.), but there are some games that you just need to suck it up and get it because it's worth it (Warcraft 3, Master of Orion 3)
Not flaming you, but still, buy the game.
Let me know when you find a good deal =)
Amazon used to have the Collector's Edition for like $39.99 after rebate. But alas the price is back up. Newegg has the regular edition for $27.99.

Delayed again. The last release date was the 18th. Now its "when it's done" which could be anytime. I've heard a fan-boy rumor that it won't leave the balancing phase until early February.

Well, it's not dying per se, but the lack of originality is stunning. When Age of Mythology was released, it was a highly anticipated game since it was the "sequel" to Age of Empires 2. Yet, most of the gameplay was old, with only a couple of original ideas (mythical units to name one).
Warcraft 3 had some very unique elements like the RPG stuff. The up and coming C&C Generals has some realistic elements (current wartime situations). But I feel like (and this is strictly my opinion), that the novelty of RTS is coming to an end soon, just like adventure games. It's sad, but I'm sick of studios putting out another rehashed RTS.
If you like strategy, you might have to look outside the traditional RTS, like turn based (MOO3), or SimCity. Also look for Imperium Galactica 3, which seems to be a simplified space RTS.
But until someone comes up with a good, original RTS, I'm almost declaring the Genre dead.

I cant recommend Medieval Total War enough. It won strategy game of the year from gamespot, ahead of WC3 and Age of Mythology, so thats saying something. I've been plaing it sicne the first day it came out and I am not disapointed by it at all.

Does that game have something to do with shogun:total war??

Nah...everything is total war these days...Shogun Total War, Medival Total War, Warcraft Total War, Solitaire Total War...
It's actually quite cool. It's really two games. One is your standard kingdom building turn-based game. The other is a tactical battlefield game that's very complete.
