as you may know, i'm a huge pearl jam fan (my avatar gives a hint of that ;))
anyway, i don't listen to their music too much because i don't want to be one of those people who ignores everything else just because they like one band.
but for the last couple days, i've been in a pearl jam binge. and is it ever good. the guitars, the vocals, the subtle bass lines, the drums, everything.
so anyway, i thought i'd share

yeah, what do you think of their new stuff whitak? just doesn't seem like the same pearl jam i grew up with... not that that's a bad thing, but i just have fond memories of rockin out to Ten and VS....

actually, i think that their new stuff is more mature musically.
it's still as good (or better) than the old stuff, and in some ways i think that "no code" is their best complete album (if you look at an album as a complete work of art, as opposed to a collection of songs).
but it's a different kind of good. Ten, Vs., and Vitalogy were definitely more "hard-rocking" than some of the newer stuff (although if you listen to songs like "habit" and "lukin" off no code, or "pilate" off yield, they still no how to rock....although in more of a punked-out way).
however, they've moved more toward music that expresses passion in a more subtle way, with songs like "red mosquito", "all those yesterdays", etc.
i realize that not everyone is into that, which is ok. but i think it was a necessary shift for the band. very few bands can survive for long periods of time when a.) they rock out like there's no tomorrow, b.) their music never changes, and c.) their lead singer rules everyone with an iron fist. (i realize that ac/dc is a notable exception to rules A and B :D)
if you look at the music credits on the newer albums, it has moved from being "the eddie vedder show" to a much more open structure, where a lot of the different band members are contributing to writing music and lyrics. in the long run, this is going to help the band stay together, and it's going to broaden the product they're putting out there, which is good too, imo.
so anyway, i'll quit babbling, but basically i like the new stuff a lot, but i recognize why a lot of people are like "wtf happened to them?"

I'll take Badmotorfinger over any Pearl Jam album any day of the week.
