Yeah, Mercury SAYS it costs $1200, but he's always catching GREAT deals.
Those same guys that sell speakers out of the back of their white van in parking lots everywhere!

It may not be what you are looking for, but it's what I am waiting for. <a href="http:\\www.empeg.com">The EMPEG player</a> It's a pullout linux based headunit, that you can run in the house with the power supply provided, drop your MP3s in to it, up to 36 gigs!! It runs on Linux too and has a bunch of on screen plug-ins... ok, go read for your self. The only down side is the price... $1200 for the base model...

just a bit too expensive
man, you can almost link your own satellite from your pc to your car for those prices rather than getting a new receiver.

You could make your own anywhere from $300-$$$ depending on what hardrive you use. Not very complicated actually. I believe Maximum PC had an article how to build your own. I'll dig it up.

The Aiwa CDC-MP3 in dash mp3 player has not shipped yet. It was originally supposed to ship in June and has been pushed back to August.
The MaximumPC article for an in dash car mp3 player costs upwards of $1000 - using the parts they recommend.
Personally, I'm waiting for the Aiwa - I don't have to mess with building it and its from a reputable company and (hopefully) will have a decent warrenty.

what's your point... that's who I'm getting if from? (I know who you are....)
PS. Why worry about burning your MP3s to CD when you can just drop a CAT-5 to your car, download, give vocal instructions... ETC. for the price, I'm still digging the Empeg. Plus, since it's basically a mini-PC, it's constantly upgradeable.
I do agree that the new MK-II is a little uglier than even the first one, but I lost out on my bid for an old one and am waiting my time in line for the MK-II.

I was at Best Buy last week and they had a Rockford-Fosgate in-dash CD system that was also a controller for an MP3 player. The MP3 player was a box about 5 inches by 3 inches that could mount anywhere (under the seat, under the dash, in the glove box) and it would hold 8 SmartMedia cards. I didn't look at the price, but look for the RFXMP3.8 on on the Rockford Fosgate web site.

The AIWA MP3 player apparently only recognizes 8.3 character names - more imporantly, it doesn't show id3 tags on the player.
Not sure about the Kenwood (around $700>)
I'm waiting for the next MP3 in dash that will display id3 tags.
For now I use my trusty MPTrip - a portable CD/MP3 discman type player. Plays burnt CDR and CDRW. It's connected to my in-dash's AUX input. It's kinda messy with wires everywhere but works great on those long trips. $115 or so at easybuy2000.com (no I don't work for them or make any money on it)
Cheers!

If I get one, I will probably get the Kenwood. It's nice to have a sales rep for Kenwood in the family, with their 50% discount and all. :D
I think he said ~$500 for head and 10 disc changer. That was a little while ago, by now they should have that 10 disc changer that reads mp3s instead of just the head unit.

I hope you won't consider this as spam, but since some people asked... My company is making mp3 car units that behave like a regular disc changer.
The good thing about it is that you don't have to trash your existing car stereo. All you have to do is put our box in your trunk and plug it to the cd changer control. Et Voila.
It comes with a removable hard drive and a docking station to hook up to your USB port on your computer. We will sell the 5 Gigs version for $499 and will start shipping very soon now.
Come check us out at http://www.phatnoise.com (Well, that's only if you want to. Who am I to give you orders anyway?).

I got one of the Aiwa MP3 CD stereos at Best buy and at under $300 it was a DEAL! It displays long file names, and ID3 Tags. It also has a wireless remote for the steering wheel.
This may not be the BEST stereo on the market, but it's sounds much better then the radio that came with my car. It was cheeper then a cd player with a 10 disk changer. I figure an MP3 CD is roughly the same as 10 CD's and it displays the Filename, Artist name, Album Name or Song Title.
Best buy will install them for free but parts for most cars cost about $30.
It looks cool too.
See it on the Aiwa Site
http://www.aiwa.com/Catalog00/Products2.asp?id=94
It's a lot cheeper then trying to do it yourself read the Maximum PC artical on making a MP3 box for your car.

They thing of things that I wouldn't, like how the shield the MB.

Wow... Thanks for the tremendous support! We have our own discussion board at
http://search.dailyphat.com/ubb_cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro
It might not be as popular as GotApex (yet) but we try to answer all PhatNoise related questions there.
If your headunit supports multiple CD changers (I know some of the Kenwood ones can do that with a special adapter for instance), then you might be able to have the CD changer and our mp3 box working concurrently. We'll have to test that though.

the Empeg is a very cool unit. My friend just picked one of the 36 gig ones up. Big Buck though. it was just over $2000.00. If you got money to burn this is the best way to go.

Matiss, from your website, it looks like the PhatNoise won't support systems that have intervening items between a CD Changer and the head unit.
Right now, I have inline on the digital bus a voice controller box as well as another separate inline controller box add-in to help me interface to the rest of the car's audio system. Does Phatnoise ignore the commands added to the digital bus from these auxilary control units and just use the standard head unit commands sent on the bus?
