This is a very complicated question, because the answer varies by person and the length of time since the last time I saw them.

Generally with my closer friends, it goes like this.
If I have seen them recently, we usually just say nothing or hi as we get into the car together. Sometimes its a hand slap.
If I havent seen them recently, its usually a hearty hug and handshake.
With females, you can add a kiss onto then.

With friends who arent as close, generally just a Hi or howdy... no matter how long its been. Handshakes are saved for introductions in my book.

Depends on the person you know and what terms your on with them.

For example if you're at a party there are ppl:
1) ...you'd walk across the room to say hello and shake their hand.
2) ...sit across the room and wave to.
3) ...acknowledge with a nod and go about your business.
4) ...notice and pretend not to know them.
5) ...and complete utter *******s you run across the room, jump over couches, shove guests to the side to and proceed to beat the living daylights out of the rat bastards and yell "Welcome to the party!!".

some of the bikers i hang with get a good "sup brotha'"

one of the chickies that rides occasionaly gets a "sweeeeetie" holler from a distance (hard to explain how this works).

some of the older guys at work get a "hi %name" or "how you doin'"? and a hand-shake.

yeah, i wish i did the little hug thing with the ladies, but i'm just not that type :( Maybe if i knew a gal better... maybe.

Depends on the person. Some people hug everyone and some people don't even hug their parents. I usually reciprocate whatever they do with me. :)

With those I love...they get a "hey you"...tight hug...an extra squeeze...& a kiss..doesn't matter where ;) ..but they get one..

If its someone I'm close to ... just a hug...

Someone I dont like but have to say hello to because I'm an adult and it's the "mature" way...
