no, i dont have them, but for some reason it's stuck in my mind that they're directly associated with someone having an STD... is that right, or is it something i've made up in my mind?
thanks.
an in case your curious, i was thinking of asking a gilr out.. she's had several sores in teh last few months. Honestly, i have no interest in dating someone that has an STD.

Isn't Cold Sores are a type of Genital Herpes.
Type 1 - Oral which most people ahve
Type 2 - Genital which fewer people have.
Both can be transfered to the other, ie. oral to genital and genital to oral if you know what i mean.
I seem to forget as my "sex ed" knowledge has run out.
I get cold sores quite often, and I can assure you that I DON'T have any std's. My kids both get them too, some people just do. My husband has never had one, and we still kiss when I have them. He just isn't a carrier.

Thanks to both of you for explaining...
of course, that doesnt really clear anything up for me other than that it doesnt necessarily mean she has an STD, which is good i suppose.
Thanks again!

you might nicely suggest to her that she can get a prescription from her doc or dentist that stops oral cold sores in their tracks. it is an ointment called Denavir and you put it on as soon as you get the feeling a cold sore is breaking out. it will make it so the cold sore doesn't even amount to anything, or it will help heal quicker one that is already full bloom.
i wouldn't kiss someone with a cold sore cause you will be likely to catch it. and i wouldn't automatically think that someone with an oral herpes sore is genitally infected.
I get a cold sore sometimes if I'm totally lacking in sleep. Once I get a good 8+ hours, it's gone.

I only get them if I don't get enough sleep or bite myself. There is this stuff called Tanac and it works really well for those things.

As Kim said, cold sores (oral herpes) are NOT an indication that a person has the STD (genital herpes). Common triggers for cold sores include stress, lack of sleep, and excessive sun exposure.
However, it is possible for cold sores to become the STD if, during an outbreak, her mouth comes into intimate contact with err ... li'l Nano. :P Generally, you're not in the mood for loving when your mouth is all puffy so it's not really an issue.

i would hope a friend would let me in on something like that which would help me out.
don't be so stupid, as if she would punch him and ruin his chances of ever getting a date. is that how you handle things by busting chops?

During this lovely time , I use Denavir and diligently take medication and supplements. In my experience, Denavir reduces the duration of outbreaks by a day or two, not nearly as effective as it's been touted to be. If I apply it at the earliest sign of a cold sore, it still lasts 2 days. So ... it's not necessarily true that Nano's coworker isn't "aware" of the products out there, but that her cold sores are just more severe. I mean, it's not like you want these things to linger. :|
EDIT: Oh, and for anyone using Denavir, give Abreva a try. It doesn't require a prescription and has worked better for me. :)

/me keeps his fingers crossedOh, I didn't mean to make it sound like they just crop up outta nowhere ... you have to be a carrier. Of course, you could be one of those lucky carriers (http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=48991&postid=411756#post411756) who has a higher "stress threshold" and never experiences outbreaks.

a cold sore is caused by a herpes virus. you get them when your resistance is down, like when you have a cold. exposure to sunlight also brings them out.
some ppl never get cold sores, but if you get one you will prolly get them periodically for life. they also seem to recurr in the same areas.

yeah, i get cold sores when i haven't had enough sleep and my body is exhausted...
nano, unless your girl is CONSTANTLY getting cold sores, like she ALWAYS has em, i wouldn't make any mention of it to her. just wait it out, cuz they go away after time, especially with medications like the ones mentioned above. there's really no need to point them out to her or offer advice about them; it's not like she doesn't know they're there, and since she's a carrier, she knows how to deal with them.
just be satisfied that they aren't, in fact, any indication of her carrying an STD. :)

UM..YEH-OK
A) WHAT THE HELL is a "dental professional"? Are you a dentist? or what? How much schooling did you have to have to do whatever job you have? (I'm just curious)-and what the hell does that have to do with this entire post? I'm a freakin NURSE-but that doesnt give me the right to "suggest" to everyone I know-cures for their heebee jeebees..SOMETIMES nickle-you will find with AGE and experience-that alot of times it is BEST to act like you don't even notice things like cold sores/blemishes etc..adults should be able to get the information they need ON THEIR OWN-if they want it-without the kind help of PEOPLE WHO WANT TO ASK THEM OUT ON FREAKIN DATES who happen to point out things like THE FACT THEY HAVE REOCCURING COLD SORES! Remember-this is someone that he wants to ASK OUT ON A DATE-not someone he has been dating-like-wow-would you discreetly tell a person with extra weight to use slim fast? or a bald person to use rogaine? comeone-get real.
B.)If you need a friend to "let you in on something like that" then I might think you either Lacking mirrors and don't realize you HAVE a coldsore,or -if you are getting cold sores-are an adult AND Haven't made the attempt to find out why they are occuring-or find out what my prevent them from occuring-then it's pretty obvious they don't bother You as much as they bother someone LOOKING at you who may suggest something to you. If that is the case-chances are the person MAY GET OFFENDED by your friendly gesture.
c.)Clearly MY STUPIDITY is not letting me see the light-I guess my 20 some odd years of NURSING, and various levels of my degrees in that field are clouding my vision. Sorry. Didn't realize that "Dental Professionals" have all the answers..thanks for clearing that up.:)
d.)and ok but maybe it's me here..but if i was a FAIRLY YOUNG WOMAN (let's say 20ish)..and some guy came over that wanted to ask me for a date-and discreetly suggested that I hook up with some cold sore meds-I think I would slap him pretty damn hard for being a jerk. Which would hardly qualify him as "date" material after that-for me, any of my friends, their friends, the friends of the friends and so on..you know how woman spread the word..so do ya REALLY think this guy is gonna be popular with the ladies? But then again I'm an old schooler-where ladies were treated with respect-not HAVE THEIR COLDSORES POINTED OUT BY RESPECTIVE DATES -ARGH.
e.) as far as me being a comedian. Any attempt at comedy is just that-an ATTEMPT..you know..to lighten the conversation..comedy/medicine/medicine/comedy-ever hear it? Laughter being the best medicine?..as far as "giving it a rest".WOW. *BLANK STARE*..-did that really come from someone who should think about giving her continously sexually laden, obviously flirty heading towards *edit here* borderline slutty posts a rest?. OUCH. :banghead:

you said a lot of uncalled for things about me. i hope you feel good about yourself and how you handled that. i think you went way overboard.

AND FOR THE RECORD-I feel GREAT about myself. Lessee'an OBLONGMELON if you haven't ever noticed is green, with a red interior with black seeds-sometimes refered to a watermelon. What EXACTLY is a dental professional again? I must have missed where you answered that? Thanks :)
