I was looking at the "Just In" bin at half.com a few minutes ago. I saw this hard drive for a seemingly outrageous price.
Well, it includes lots of software as noted below. A very unique way of selling a combination package. I wonder if there will be any takers? (I didn't put this in the Got Deals forum because I just wanted to see what everyone thought of this method of selling software.)

Condition: Brand New
Seller's Comments: 20.4 GB Brand New Hard Drive, with Windows XP Professional, Office, Norton Anti-Virus and Front Page. Worth almost $1,200

Full description:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional $299.00 Norton Internet Securityż 2002 Professional Edition $99.95 Microsoft FrontPage 2002 $169.00 Office XP Professional contains: $579.00 Microsoft Word version 2002 Microsoft Excel version 2002 Microsoft Outlook® version 2002 Microsoft PowerPoint® version 2002 Microsoft Access version 2002 This is a hard drive with all the latest software you will ever need. It has a total value of $1146.95. The hard drive is a Quantum Hard Drive, with a capacity of 20.4 GB. It has a warranty for 3 years so buy with confidence. It is in perfect condition, and it is brand new. I am selling it as I have to leave the country.

The prices he has listed for the software are inflated. I wonder if you'll get the original discs or 'backups'?

yeah, "backups" or student copies that you can pick up at most universities for 5-10 bucks..hehe

I thought that selling a HD or CPU with OEM made it legal. You can't sell OEM software by itself.

Once I tried to skirt eBay's OEM policy by bundling a 486 CPU with an OEM copy of Word 2000. They canceled my auction.

Two people have told me that if you try to update Windows XP from Microsoft's site and you are not the original owner, that it will be automatically wiped off of your hard drive

I had to buy Win98 at one of the local computer stores. They sold it to me at a lower price because I had bought all the components of a computer. Otherwise it would've been a lot more expensive.

That's good to know. It did sound a little strange when they mentioned it.

I smell piracy.

I enjoy the on going battle. With the next release MS will have a completly different anti-piracy scheme. It forces them to think in ways that if previous versions had not been cracked, would never have been though of (does that make sense). It then forces the crackers to think in other ways that MS didn't think of. Eventually with the work of integrating software and hardware they might win, at least for a while. But by that time I plan to be rich and buy all of my software. At least those are my hopes. Damn school making me broke. Anyway back on track. Who knows, maybe they come up with some great security scheme where the software is completly copy proof, but at the same time makes your computer completly secure. Either way I am happy, its MS's software they get to do what they want, don't like it don't use it, simple. And if MS leaves a hole in the software, its their fault and deserves to be exploited until they fix it.
