View Full Version : DVD's at Columbia House for about 9 dollars each...shipped!

I didn't see this deal anywhere in this forum so I'll just post it (I saw this at another site). This is the second deal I've ever posted so I don't know how good a deal it is but...
The Samsung DVD players have a code for Columbia House, You need to call it in (Can't do this one online), but the people on the phone never ask if you actually BOUGHT the DVD player. The code is "HMA". The number you need to call is 1-800-286-6919
The deal is:
3 DVDs for $1.00 each
1 DVD free
1 DVD for $14.95
and no shipping costs on any of those.
You then have to buy two more DVD's in the next two years at 19.95 a piece.
Go to their website to see the list of movies. The catalogs they send you when the DVD's are shipped are supposed to have a nice big selection (the site is kinda scarce).

So, this is the basic Columbia House deal. Except now it is for DVDs.

Hey, just came out of lurking to let you know that there's an even better deal going on right now at Columbia House.
You can use promotional code FVT to get 6 DVDs for an average of $8.22 each. You can even use this code online at their site (no need to call their reps).
The deal is:
Intro Package:
3 DVDs for $1.00 (+ $1.69 shipping each)
4th DVD for $6.95 (+ $1.69 shipping)
5th DVD for $6.95 (+ $1.69 shipping)
Fulfillment Obligation
Buy one more in the next year at $19.99 or more (+3.99 shipping)
So your best bet is to get really expensive DVDs as your enrollment selections Some examples:
Armageddon: Criterion Edition - $49.99 MSRP
Clerks : SE - $39.99 MSRP
Scream: SE - $39.99 MSRP
There are a ton more with MSRPs of over $30. Just make a list of what you really want, then go to Amazon or somewhere, and find out what the most expensive ones are on your list.
Also, you can have two accounts active per household.
When you fufill your membership, call customer service and cancel your membership, and join again in 2 or 3 days.
I've done this deal (or other similar Columbia House ones) 7 times so far, to get about 45 DVDs for $400.

Ok, I took the bait and just did some major research for the best deal on this..
I signed up at www.colombiahouse.com (http://www.colombiahouse.com) for the dvd club and then went through all the dvds with a search for completed auctions on Ebay and compared each DVD's average resale price. I then ordered: Scarface ($22 on Ebay), The Stand ($22 on Ebay), Clerks (SE for about $20.25 on Ebay), Life is Beautiful ($20.25) and Dragonheart ($20 on Ebay). Total Ebayable value: $104.50!! It cost me $25.35 in total for the first five which will arrive in 2-3 weeks, leaving me one more to buy at about $24... of course if I sell these 5 on Ebay I'll make ($104.50 - $35.35) $79.15 anyway. I figure if I have my wife do this as well we can score close to $160 in free money and then get down to business on DVDs!!
Just FYI some other good movies to get (besides the 5 I did) are: Armageddon, Blues Brothers, Good Will Hunting, Pink Floyd - The Wall, Dante's Peak, 10 Commandments, Tombstone. All of these have resale values over $18 each, with another 10 or so over $17 (per Ebay completed auctions). Go FOR IT!
I also just talked to Customer Service and they say it will take about a week to get a club ID# so I can order my last one on-line and cancel. Thats ok. Now I just have to find the cheapest 19.99 DVD and sign up AGAIN!! Thanks for the tip!

Oh, and I used the Charybdis Coad of FVT for the better of the two code deals!!

So the FVT coupon (was that what it was?) is still more expensive than the one I posted...And this is not the regular Columbia House deal. Their usual DVD deal really sucks and they rape you for the price.

With this FVT code, the commitment varies depending on the number of DVD's you take at the start.
If you only take the 3 for $1 each, then you're obliged to buy THREE at full price. Take the 4th at $6.95, and you need to by two at full price. If you initially get 5, *then* you only have to buy 1 at full price. A bit f*cked up, methinks, but whatever floats their boat. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif
So, it makes sense in more ways than one to grab all 5 straight off. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks for the hook-up. I used the FVT code to get my five DVD's, including a cool Aeon Flux compilation, Starship Troopers, and the Shining. Cause if your going to get DVD's, they may as well be ones that will look cool because of the DVD.

I don't think so -- yours is $65.83 for 7 DVDs (($1x3)+$0+$14.95+($19.95x2)+($3.99x2)) which equals $9.40 per.
The FVT deal is $49.29 for 6 DVDs (($1x3)+($6.95x2)+($1.69x5)+($19.95+$3.99)) which equals $8.22 per.

I was going to do this but I noticed that their site is not secure for credit cards.
Maybe I will do it via the an old bank check...

Sandman,
I too thought they didn't have a secure website. But when you do a checkout, there is on top of the page towards the right hand side that says "Try our secure page" or something to that effect.

Would someone be kind enough to list the DVDs that Columbia carries? Thanks!
It's alot of DVDs. Too many to type out.

As far as making a list of available titles, Leon is right, there are way too many to list.
As a general rule, you can get just about any title from them as an enrollment selection with these exceptions:
- Any DVD released by Disney/Buena Vista (Except Armageddon)
- Any DVD released by Fox Studios (Except Porky's)
- Any Multi DVD set
- Any DVD that has been newly released within the last 90 days

if you are looking for cheapo movies, they have a few $15 dvds i saw on their bargain page.
had just cause and nothing but trouble, i know for sure. too bad i already have both. i know theyre crappy, but for around $3 each i couldnt say no.
also, if you are waiting a while to buy your 6th movie with the FVT code, call the 800# and talk to a rep about becoming a "preferred member," that being they wont mail you any crap.

The main info is from DVDTalk's Bargain forum (http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubbcgi/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=DVD+Bargains&number=1&DaysPrune=2&LastLogin=). Yeah I linked it. I think the members there deserve a lot of the credit for the info and should be recognized.
P.S. - Thanks for bringing the info to everyone in this forum, it's been long overdue! http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

Olomite: https:// denotes a secure connection. I don't know why your browser isn't showing a lock for that, but it should. If it doesn't support secure connections is should choke on the 'https' tag. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

Oh, btw, when you enter that code and you get dumped to the list of titles that you're *supposed* to choose from, there's a bit at the bottom:
"* This selection is not available as an enrollment selection."
Now, searching by name, a lot of stuff is coming up with asterisks next to 'em. Both versions of Armageddon have it, Trainspotting does, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels does.
I'm gonna try it anyways and see what happens. If they tell me I can't have my selections, then I'll tell 'em where they can stick it. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yeah, that forum has a large grid of all the codes, and the best DVD's to get. I was suprised that APEX hasn't listed it.
These 'clubs' used to be a real pain in the A$$, but I guess they have caved in due to pressure from consumer groups to make them eaiser to cancel.

Yea If anyone is about to order from Columbia House, go to this thread in the DVDtalk forum
http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/014327.html
They have a VERY detailed price layout of what should be bought for the startup, and what should be bought for fulfilling a commitment.

Looks like they took Armageddon Criterion Collection off their site. All they list is the widescreen version.

Anyone have the link to enter the FVT code to sign up. Now there is only a:
3 movies for $1 each, plus $1.69 each shipping and handling (total $8.07)
and then chooose a 4th selection for $14.95, plus $1.69 shipping and handling, which added to my $8.07 payment (total $24.71). I then need buy only 3 more (instead of 4) in the next 2 years.
Doesn't seem like much of a deal now. unless you buy one for $19.99 and 2 for $16.99 each.
for a total of $11.24 each, which I guess still isn't bad since you can sneak the codes for the higher priced ones like:
Armageddon: Director's Cut - Criterion Collection $49.98 2324705
Good Will Hunting - Collector's Series $39.98 2221703
12 Monkeys - Collector's Edition $34.95 2035509
Mallrats - Collector's Edition $34.95 $29.95 2355006
Chasing Amy - Criterion Collection $39.98 2490100
Sex and the City (Season 1) $39.95 2469104
I Know What You Did Last Summer - Double Feature $39.95 2487601
Demon City Shinjuku $29.95 2025906
Bicentennial Man $32.99 2490308
The FVT deal is much better, I hope it isn't dead.

Got mine. Didn't get Saving Private Ryan DTS Edition though -- they said they weren't able to send it (no reason) and gave a "rain check" certificate which they say can be used on anything $29.95 or less. Problem is that Saving Private Ryan was $34.95...
Sandman

I didn't know you could sell them to brick and mortars. Are you saying that you got them as "gifts"? I know some people here have done it with Best Buy and Tower Records when purchased from other places, but I didn't know it was possible with DVD's from CH. Since they package the DVD's themselves, so I was assuming they had a different barcode label on the back.
Could someone please clarify on this?
Thanks...

This not a bad deal at all. Remember that you can have 2 accounts per household. Also note that after about 2 weeks call the CSR and request to be placed as a "Preferred Customer". This means that they will not send you the monthly DVD. Once finished, call and cancel, not hard at all.
If you get a rain check for an order, call the customer service and see if they list it in stock. Sometimes this works, it has for several persons.
You can do this several times if you wish (I haven't, but you can). Please note it does take several weeks for the first order to get to you.
Happy DVD'ng!

Yup... got mine last saturday...
Got me a the Armagadon Crition edition and the dts Saving private ryan. And dont forget the Enter the Dragon 25 Aniversity edition!!!...
Now, I only have to get one more DVD and I am all set.

I've been going gang-busters on this deal... I ordered on-line on 7/15/00 and got my first 5 DVDs on 7/30/00. I also ordered on the phone (1-800-286-6919) and gave them FVT code on 7/18/00 and got those 5 DVDs on 7/31/00. The buzz on other sites is that it takes about a week less time to get your DVDs if you use the phone instead. I've now ordered a total of 5 sets (30 DVDs) for a total cost of 52.13/set ($8.69/dvd) = $260.65. I added up the MSRP on these 30 and it comes to $1,054.05. Not a bad deal, especially since I've sold the first 10 that I got on Ebay for an AVERAGE PROFIT of $22/DVD. I've got a few up there on Ebay now (My Ebay ID is also SPHiatt).
The best way to do this if you want turn around is: 1) Call the 800# above and order your first 5 DVDs... then ask for your Customer # (about 75% of the time they will give it to you, it depends on your CSR), and also ask to be a PREFERRED MEMBER so they won't send you those little cards to mail back.
2) 3 days later your customer # will be in the system.. call back and order your 6th DVD and then cancel your account at the same time. On this same call sign up AGAIN with a new account (Give them FVT and get 5 more selections for $25.32!)... Rinse and Repeat!
Remember you can have two accounts per household so you can get these alternating and get 5 new DVDs about every other day if you want.
Oh and the Armageddon Criterion Collection is NO LONGER AVAILABLE, CH sold out. To bad. I oversold on CLERKS CE when I spammed ebayers and needed two more copies, so I took an Armageddon Criterion + 1 Life is Beautiful and exchanged them at Hastings Music and Video for $85 in in-store credit.. then I got two Clerks for $70 and a used DVD for $10 (US Marshalls for myself)... and they still gave me back a couple of bucks for lunch! Not bad at all! I guess I could have taken 5 DVDs in and gotten like $200 credit and picked up a Dreamcast system and some games.. it would have only cost me $8.69/DVD * 5 = 43.45!! Not bad.
