View Full Version : Children left to wait while mom & dad gamble through the night..........

Because I live in a casino area in CT & have frequented a few in the New Jersey area, I feel this is a serious issue that many really don't pay much attention to...
Children left to sit in lobbys or "non gambling areas" of the casino, while mom & dad gamble away throughout the night.
One, two , sometimes more children sitting on floors, laying on rugs, benches, or leaning on the steps going down to the casino floor half asleep or looking so lost you just want to scoop them up and take them home so they can be safe...
I've witnessed it..many times....
This makes me so angry....I think its sick, and there should be stiff fines for this behavior :bash: ...If the parents cant be responsible..at the very least, someone has to , so lets make it the casino's duty....
I think the casino's, which claim to be family oriented should look past the almighty dollar and focus on the safety of these children....Family oriented should not mean leave your child unattended at 2 in the morning while you plug quarters in a slot machine 5 aisles down making the Indians or trump richer...
Like the many rules that casinos have...they should have one that prohibits bringing young children into any part of the casino after a certain time....no "ifs, ands, or buts" about it...
Your thoughts on this????

When I was around 12 or 13, the family went on a vacation within Nevada and ended up in Reno. My parents went to one of the local casinos. They had a place for kids to stay that had adult supervision. It was filled with pinball machines and other electronic games. We were there for a couple hours, and we both had fun.
Shouldn't casinos now have something similar?
Sheesh, spend some of that casino money and get a babysitter. Poor kids! I've seen this a lot in Wendover too..makes me so angry!
This is not a problem that solely afflicts casinos. Parents leave little Billy or Susie in toys stores to be watched by store employees.

get over yourselves people, the kids can stay in the hotel room if they really wanted to,
And personally i think the kids should be allowed in the casino.

write to your congressmen...
demand that all casino's have what Hoser was describing. Having Casino employees looking after kids in a room full of free video games.

While having an adult-supervised room full of arcade games sounds great, it doesn't address the fact that these degenerates have their kids out until all hours of the night/morning.
This is another example of how selfish people can be and why you should have to pass some sort of test before you're allowed to have children.
You've got to pass a test to drive a car and get a license to fish, but any two people with the right parts can become parents.

This suddenly reminds me of a time when my Grandfather fell asleep while watching my brother in the hotel room, and he ran down wearing nothing but a diaper to go play the slot machines. :heh:

Most of the time if they are a guest of the hotel, they get the kids area as a comp. The kids that I think they are talking about are ones without a room to go to. Locals here do this all the time. Hear about it all the time on the news. I would hate to be security at one of these places.

Not only toy stores, but any store! With school out this week, we have lines at the PS2 at work 10 kids long and they already broke the newly fixed XBox and PSOne systems! It's gonna be a long week. And forgive us if we say anything to your kid! It isn't our place to say "no you can't skate in the store"

I was trying to win money so I could finish it :P but the person I was with wanted to do "other things" instead of gambling :o
As far as having a "video/arcade" room...thats great for teens...who don't mind being out that late....the "YOUNG" children I was speaking of waiting for mom & pops, were most definately "YOUNG"...under 5...not teens..I don't think a 5 yr old would enjoy playing arcade games at 2 in the morning...
As far as the grandfather in the diaper ...don't let him drive...ok?;)

Oh, for crying out loud, there are plenty of situations like this out in the world, to sit there and use the gambling as a reason, is just trying to find a reason to blame them.
For example, I am sitting in a movie theater at 12:00am, and there is a 3 year old child with both parents there.
The problem isnt what they are doing...its the parents themselves. The people are putting their desires and pleasure over the welfare of their kids. The reality is that they shouldnt be parents.

During my stint in Melbourne (Australia), when the casino first opened up there. Some parents who had infant children were left in the cars, unattended for many hours in sweltering heat. Some were rescued by police patrolling the parking lots. Others were not so lucky.
Some even left small children in the car with some water and food, but it was not enough to protect those children from the extreme heat of the Australian summer.

older kids dont need a supervised arcade. over 13 and i say the kid can find his own arcade or sit in the hotel room. the younger kids are sad to see, but atleast they are in a public area where no real harm will come of them. Its the lesser of two evils, get over it and just take better care of your kids

As far as I know, casinos only give hotel rooms to high rollers. Regardless, I don't believe that a casino is a decent place to bring kids. It's just setting them up to one more addiction that they can live without!

Actually thats not true. I have a friend who gets comped all the time and he only bankrolls like $1000-2000.
But Vegas is marketing itself more and more to families...all kinds of amusement rides, arcades, etc...

wow. would you want your 13-year-old daughter or son finding his/her own arcade and taking care of him/herself in Vegas??? there's NO effing way i'd let my son do that when he's 13!!! do you know how many freaks there are out there waiting on parents to do something like that? that's when you know gambling is a problem. when you are willing to place gambling above the welfare of your family.

Exactly....Never would I leave my 13 yr old unattented in a casino...daughter or son...nevermind a child of 5 or 6...if the art of leaving your child unattended in casinos continues...it won't be long nor would it take a rocket scientist or a kidnapper/child molester, too long to figure out the "ideal" place to steal a child, if they haven't already...Forget the malls... go to the casinos where the parent does everything but put a sign on their childs neck stating :
" Hellooooo whackos, I'm unattended, come take me, they won't notice I'm gone till the morning"
To put your childs safety second to anything, no matter...is a tragedy...like playing russian roulette ...

all the kid has to is scream. they are in a public place. maybe you wouldnt want to leave your kid unattended, but guess what it isnt your kid. you cant tell people how to raise their kids. a 13 year old sitting unattended for an hour at a time isnt a big deal. Im 18 and I have visited several casinos with my best friens family. the grandparents gamble and we roam. I always run into younger kids sitting around. its same risk as a mall your just trying to controlminor details in other peoples lives out of your control.

since i'm only 28, i hate to pull the old "wait until you're older and have kids" thing on you, but wait until....i can pretty much guarantee you will NOT feel that way. of course the kid just has to scream. unless the guy slips him a free drink with a drug in it. or tells her that if she makes noise he'll kill her mom, or tells the kid that he found an Xbox outside and wants to know if he wants it. or...
there's a big difference in letting 16-18 year-olds run around and letting 10-13 year-olds do the same. it's an effed up world and letting your young kids sit in a car or lobby with no adult supervision for extended periods of time is just stupid and wrong. and we can legislate what parents do in the public arena when it comes to potential abuse.
