transfer programs/files to new computer

Just built a new computer to replace the Compaq my friend has. But he has some programs and files on the Compaq he would like to use on the new computer. Is there a way to transfer those programs and files to the new computer. Can I use Norton Ghost or any other program to do this.

not a good idea...........with transfering app. but data is okay.

just slap the old drive into the new computer and run it as a second drive and take data from it.
or use it as a cache drive for IE,Win OS, etc.....
