ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey (AP) -- A plan to name a street after boxing promoter Don King is in for a fight, with critics complaining there are more deserving people.

The proposal, which would designate a stretch of Mississippi Avenue as Don King Boulevard, was pulled from the City Council agenda Monday by sponsor William Marsh, who said he would submit it again at a later date.

Before doing so, Marsh heard complaints from two residents.

"I grew up on Mississippi Avenue and I never saw him on my playground," said Joseph LaTorre. "I never saw him do anything here until he became famous."

LaTorre suggested naming the street for successful local merchants or a priest. "There are superstars in all races," LaTorre said, provoking a testy exchange with Marsh.

Marsh wants the designation to honor King for the boxing matches he has promoted with Atlantic City casinos.

Besides slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Atlantic City has streets named for former Mayor James L. Usry and former city firefighter John Seedorf, who died in the line of duty, among others.

Who better to honor than a convicted murderer and tax cheat. That's just the convicted stuff. Forget all he's stolen/extorted/shookdown from fighters/handlers and the locales where he's held his fights.

Nonetheless, he's an incredible character (not worthy, though, of naming a street after...IMHO).

Next they'll want the Monopoly board re-drawn to include him.

True, very true, but it would go along with the character of that slimy town.
