Whats the stand on DVD burners today?
A while ago nothing was really standardized yet and buying one wasn't recommended until some common standard was available.

Is this no longer an issue? Thinking of purchasing one and was just curious.

thanks

there really isnt a single dvd standard yet. if you still want to buy one, i suggest the sony DRU500A (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=ZuAha9jxbzkha-bkmXkrYJf9IZv3_vAYF1A=?CatalogCategoryID=1NIKC0%2eNzVQAAADynW88lSwT&ProductID=aZwKC0%2eNNe8AAADybUU8lSwf&Dept=cpu), it burns the 4 major dvd formats, DVD-R/-RW, DVD+RW/+R and CD-R/CD-RW.

thanks My brother has the same concerns and is vowing to wait until the come up with a standard, he hasn't purchased one yet so I'm guessing it's still in limbo.

DVD-R and DVD-RW seems to be winning the contest.

depends how you look at it.

On the retail front, +r/+RW actually takes up more shelf space, and is easier to find. But for DVD player compatibility, -R/-RW wins hands down by far, and tends to be in more purchased systems.

As was said, the Sony burner hands both formats, so your bases are covered, and is a fairly nice burner to boot.
