Nuclear verses conventional bombs

I was listening to a talk show on the way home and a male caller asked the host "what is the reason for not using nuclear weapons" Well, while being intrigued by the questions I was also thinking to myself where has this guy been, I understand depending on the size of the nuke you would only need one as compared to maybe 50 conventional, maybe someone has a better ratio. But there are also environmental issues if not to that country but others surrounding, Nuclear fall out and sickness for one. Aside from the known visual destruction maybe someone has some knowledge on environmental and human recovery.

I think the main reason we don't use nukes is because if one country uses them, it makes it easier for other countries to use them. We don't want Pakistan and India using them, so therefore we won't use them in Iraq.

Kind of like we don't want to open Pantera's box.

you think? it was widely reported in non-mainstream news that we used tacticle nuclear weapons in afganistan! that's what makes it kind of scrwed up that we try to tell other countries they can't make nukes. we have a freakin stockpile of big nukes(that we've only used twice) and a bunch of smaller nukes that we probably have used.

It is just a matter of time before a nuclear bomb is used somewhere. Pakistan and India both nuclear powers in particular are problematic. Pakistans president recently alluded (http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?BRD=1078&dept_id=151021&newsid=6542336&PAG=461&rfi=9) that nuclear weapons would have been used against India troops in the recent crisis there. Now Musharraf says he was misquoted. :sure:

Bzzzzzzt! Wrong answer. Conventional bombs kill many people too, and we still use them. That's the whole point. Kill people and destroy property. That's how you win wars.

Nukes are not used because they contaminate property. We nor anyone else can use the land or surrounding area for decades in the case of a tactical warhead, or millenia in the case of a normal nuke. Any victory won by large scale nuclear war is a phyric victory. There is nothing left to win.

Another great reason not to use them is that no one wants to be the first. We all know what happens to the first nation to launch warheads, they get a full scale retaliation. And that would suck.
