I sometimes use my last initial instead of my entire last name. I also set up a junk email address to help filter out spam. If you're in college, then there should be no problem giving your phone number.

BTW, if you have a pentium !!! chip, be very careful. Intel can track your every move even when you're not on the internet! http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/biggrin.gif.

Usually I do the same as Jago for both the last name and junk email address (thanks hotmail!). Sometimes I accidentally type in the wrong phone number, "Ooops, was that supposed to be a 6?"

Hotmail is excellent for filtering out junk mail!! I would recommend that.
Give a fake name if you want, but go ahead with the real address. No one's going to come get you. I also give fake ph #'s.
Here's a common one I do...
My cat's name is Merlin. He's a cat (duh!)
So I type in my name as Merlin Thecat.
Believe it or not, I've been tempted to take up credit card offers for my cat... Mind you, the cat's been deceased for over a year! But I figure his yearly allowance was around 1,000 dollars (he of course spent the money on food, litter, and toys)
BTW Dulipo, your question was not dumb. It should have been asked in another forum, and maybe phrased a little better. But, this is something that concerns every one of us.

does anyone here actually give their real information or do you all make up dummy info? I could be very silly in giving out my info
before you post anymore, read the rules. this post belongs in off topic. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif
also, no one cares what you put in your info. well, i can't speak for everyone, but i know that i don't care what people put.

Why wouldn't you post your real address? I mean, you want the t-shirt right? I guess you could have a safe house set up so that all that stuff goes there, but then why are you even ordering for a free t-shirt? or maybe you have a summer home and all those t-shirts are for the beach.

Well I guess that's been the problem this whole time! I've been using fake addy's and haven't gotten one freebie yet. I was getting worried. . . what a great idea, real address. . .
hehe

Haha, man the new guy get's ragged on.
Dulipo, if you're ordering a free product then the most obvious thing to put is a REAL address where you could receive the item. That and maybe your name (or something "close" to it) might be the only real info you need to give. Everything else is a judgement call.
if you're really paranoid just send stuff to a friend's house with a goofy name on it that only they will know relates to you. this comes in real handy when you need to utilize a deal 2 or more times. never, never give your real phone #, your email address gets handed out to all kinds of spamming companies, you dont want that to happen to your phone!

I thought the same thing except I got an ish-load of junk mail. The sender's domains change so I can't block the sender. Here's an example:
[email protected].. Jul 28 2000 How To Meet & Win With Women -ctcomc 4k
[email protected] Jul 29 2000 STOP SMOKING IN 7 DAYS GUARANTEED 2k

I always use my real name and phone for everything, I just put my cell phone # which has caller ID for all the people I care about and I leave it off most of the day while at work anyway.
If only we could all have 4 or 5 different addresses to get all those deals going 4-5 times. Now THATS what family is for.
Is it just me or does it seem odd that EVERYONE in your family doesn't go find deals in the world? I tell them and tell them about these amazing deals and they seem pretty stoked about what a great deal I got for something, yet they NEVER bother to get any of it for themselves. Whats up with that?

Yeah, my parents never do any of the deals. I really don't know why... they didn't even want to do the Casino on Net happy hour for $300. The only thing they were ever interested in was the Infomarkets thing but only got 3 of their own referrals, I had to get the rest. UGH. How can people NOT love deals?

Hotmail also has a feature that sends bulk mail (i.e. not addressed to your name) to a bulk mail box. Generally, these e-mails that have the changing "from" don't address the e-mail to you specifically, rather they're addressed to a list of suckers. But by using the block feature and the bulk mail filter, I've limited the spam that gets through to about 1 or 2 per week!
I've been pretty happy with hotmail as a free e-mail service.
BTW, I've noticed MyPoints to be the worst. They address mail to me specifically from about 20 different "from:". I've just had to keep hitting block until I no longer get the MyPoints spam.
i dont really know anyone that wants to look for deals either. they all ask me what did i get today, but they never look for deals for themselves. wussup wit dat? are we all cheapskates or what?

That's the thing though
while address may seem harmless enough, I've been getting more junk mail in general. companies make profit by selling info you all know that...but they're also crossreferencing all info into profiles. That's why I'm wondering if there's a way around that. Paranoid or not, somethings should be kept private

If you are concerned about spam, I saw something on this board a coupla months ago that was real helpful.
spamhole. (http://www.spamhole.com)
It's an e-mail addy that disappears after two hours or something like that. So spammers just get bounced: joke's on them! HA!

If you're at college, use your campus address! If not then you'll have to decide which is more important: Free Stuff or Not Getting Junk Mail.

I always give my real name and addy, but when it comes to phone number, I have give a number thats provided by a local company that gives out your own private voicemail number. I have a message on their that sounds like it could be a home or work number, and so if the company really wants to get a hold of me, they can leave a message.
