At the risk of making a total A* out of myself, I may need to pardon my ignorance beforehand....I usually stay away from all the political hoopla about the comings and goings of Indian tribes and casino's and anything remotely related to them, though I live in casino land practically :o ...however, in the newspaper today, once again the Indians are at it again...top story, center page, are the words "Las Vegas" Repeal Leads to Charges of Racism....

A vote to repeal Las Vegas Nights is a vote against black people in Connecticut....claims members of the National Assoc. for Advancement of Colored People....The NAACP may even file civil-rights lawsuits for the tribe
...blahhh blahhh blahhhh...
The Mashantucket Pequots own & operate a casino in the middle of
farm country...across the river, the Mohegans operate another casino,
...now we have tribes coming out of the woodwork...
everyone's a freaking Indian now....though my great grandmother was a full blooded Indian, I don't think I count in the States seeing as she was from Canada...so that leaves me still dirt poor
Now the Paugussetts (the new black tribe) are pissy cause they haven't been given a fair shake because its members are "urban-based" and black....
Setting all the legal mumble jumble and gambling issues aside,
My question boils down to this......Where does it all stop....and
Is there such thing as a "Black Indian or is this the new age thing?
Or did I suck in History for a reason?

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that most African Americans didn't *ask* to be here.

Other than that, though, there can be arguments made for "black tribes" in North America. Many slaves escaped and joined existing Indian tribes and others escaped and formed their own colonies of former slaves. Some of these colonies were in existence for quite a long time. An argument could stand that these "black tribes" had more claim to that land than the Americans who later settled there.

Now, tracing one's heritage back to those tribes is an even bigger debacle, especially considering that there are so few records of any sort on the subject.

ok..for the sake of argument Lado...let me ask you this....
There's a lot of people who didn't *ask* to be here ... and there's always the choice to leave and go elsewhere...correct? Noone forces anyone to stay in this country  and thats just how I feel...
No sense in claiming you are something you aren't just because you're angry...( I don't mean you personally :D )

I'd be willing to bet I have more Indian in me than half those "so-called black Indians"...

Want a bite of my candybar? :bonk: :P

I'm pretty sure your ancestors chose to come here. I'm also guessing they werent chained into their bunk on teh boat ride over either...

Noone forces anyone to stay in this country

Why should they leave their own country? I hate that whole, "if you don't like it then leave" line. If people don't like how their country is being run its their right to complain and try to get it changed.

I wouldn't be so sure. Are you an anthropologist who specializes in american indian tribes of the northeast? Why don't you let someone whose job it is to tell be the one to figure that out.

:) I'm not sure what my ancestors chose to do Canta, but from stories I've read and were told to me....My ancestors walked backwards in a raging blizzard for miles and miles with no shoes on to a one room schoolhouse that had no heat. :D

..and I hate, " because I'm black I can't I can't I can't"...I never asked anyone to leave..matter of fact, Lado is the one that suggested a possibility that it could have had to do with the fact that most African Americans didn't *ask* to be here...I simply just suggested a possibility that they have the choice to leave if they didn't want to be here....and for once, I agree with you Canta...if you don't like how your country is being run, do something to fix it...don't b*h that everyone is out to get you...
However, I fail to see how building casinos is going to help this country & becoming one of the "tribe" Do you really believe that they would be scrambling to operate a casino and making such a hoopla about it, if there wasn't any money in it for them... I doubt it. This isn't about claiming their heritage Canta..this is about that almighty pot of gold that sits behind those slot machines...geesh...

..Yes my great grandmother was full blooded Indian and personaly I really don't give a s* what tribe I'm from...it won't change who I am...of course unless they say...all those people from tribe "big~a~moutha in Canada" you have a stake in 50 million dollars ..come claim your heritage...well then..I guess then I'd have to scramble and get me some papers :P ...and No, I know nothing about anthropology, sorry

Don't be to sure. Quite a few europeans were forced to colonize the "New World" for such crimes as: being poor, looking at their lord funny, objecting to abuses by their "betters", and many other terible crimes.

Well, as they are bitching about it and not actualy doing anything about it, they might as well leave.

Oh, get real. This whole "Are you an expert?" nazi crap has got to go. This is a forum. People get to express their opinion about things without 3 doctorate degrees and a published book. She did not state that she knew it to be a fact that she had more Native American blood than the "black tribes" she said she would be willing to bet. A perfectly fine statment.

I am 1/16th Native American! I want a casino too!!!

The tribes that live on reservations are preserving a culture, they are soverign nations. The "black indians" are already assimilated into our culture and don't have any Native American belief structure or organization. They can have their casino though, right after I get mine.

You made me laugh outloud Grimm...thanks...Just think of the possibilities ...between your 1/16th Native American and my Big~a~moutha Native Canada we'll out slot those Paugussetts ;)

On a more personal note here...I had no intention of turning this into a racial issue...my point was, that everyone and their brother lays claim to the casino gold mine...the tribe I speak of is one of many that have tried to claim an Indian heritage and build a casino...there were many before Foxwoods..our first in CT...

I would have still made this thread had the tribe been Asian...I've never seen an Asian Indian either...and that I believe was my original question...

Is there such thing as a "Black Indian or is this the new age thing?

I think this is where TERRIBLETOM's "yes or no" thread would have come in handy :P He wouldn't like us for beating around the bush, thats for sure :D

This 'Las Vegas Nights' law inadvertently allowed Indian tribes to open casinos. Lawmakers recently repealed the law before a third Indian tribe {"newly recognized" http://home.earthlink.net/~sbp777/smilies/rolleye.gif} opens up a ca$ino.

Is it rather humorous seeing everyone and their grandmother claiming to be Indian descent. http://home.earthlink.net/~sbp777/pics/bleh.gif

"Rep. Andrea Stillman, D-Waterford, said civic organizations and churches would lose $156,000 of the $17 million raised annually in charitable contributions."

Gee the NAACP files another attention seeking lawsuit. Who would have thought it? http://home.earthlink.net/~sbp777/pics/bleh.gif

Funny, all these people claiming this heritage and that heritage, but it all comes down to one color of one thing: the green of moola! :kaching:

If they get anything I hope its a small lot in the middle of the dessert, they can play the pee ball and three walnut shells. On a serious note, if they are awarded native recognition where is the money going to come from, NAACP or maybe some ohter special interest groups will kick in a dollar. just to have there name in bold letters. I also wonder if they will be pressured to hire a % of minorities.
