View Full Version : Looking DVD Player (for the TV) deal, plus some questions about it.

I just found out that, infuriatingly enough, my computer's DVD player is so old it can't read double-layered DVDs, knocking pretty much everything I can find out. I figured if I'm going to get a new player, it might as well be for the TV - the 21" monitor I have is big, but not that big.

The thing is, I'm not really sure what I'm looking for; I mean, I know I don't need the progressive scan ones, because I don't have or plan to get HDTV soon. I don't think I need one with a Dolby Digital/DTS decoder built in, because I don't have a receiver with 5.1 inputs - I think when I get a new receiver, I'll get a surround sound one with DD and DTS decoders built in. So, I guess I'm looking for a good brand, cheap, 1-disc DVD player. Anyone have recommendations based on what they've had or seen? I don't even know what brand to look for, though Panasonic, Sony, and RCA seem reputable enough.

Thanks in advance,
Ben

Well I can recommend Konka, got one for $125 through mobshop. Out of all of the dvd players under $250 this seems to do well above other competitors in magazine reviews (home theater and other similar publications). The quality is very good for what you pay. And for using it on a 21" should be no problem at all. Some people have had problems with powersupplies failing on the older models, but they seem to have fixed that. If you get it, have it on and playing a movie for 20 hours at least, if it still works, the powersupply is good to go. If you want something a little more name brandish, go with a panasonic basically all of the panasonics are really reliable.

I would recomend the Philips one that just came out. I got it at Target for $179. It has all the features you woould want with the DTS, Dolby, etc. Price is not bad either but make sure you shop around before buying it. I saw the same one advertised in Circuit City for 239. What a rip off over $50 more than Target.

I recommend the toshiba sd-1200. It can go as low as 205 i believe on Mobshop plus i think u can still use the 25 off 100 visa rebate. Its a gread dvd player and i just recently bought one myself and i love mine. You can also try ubid.com and see if you can find other dvd players that interest you. I would personally recommend sticking with panasonics and toshibas, though ive heard sonys are decent too.

I am also looking to buy a DVD player. Where can I get the best deals? I am looking for either Toshiba or Panasonic.

Slightly more expensive than the others, but I have had a Pioneer 525 for several months and so have 2 other people I know, and we've all been very happy.

Oh, yeah, forgot to add, it's now been replaced by the 333, so you can probably find a 525 for around $200.

I'm seeing it listed on MobShop for $169.95 - this sounds like a great deal, is it?
