I've been receiving some weird e-mails, supposedly from various friends, some that I never knew had my e-mail address. All to my primary e-mail account. Each have two attachments, one a jpg, and the other an exe file usually around 150k in size or more. I haven't used any e-mail program like outlook, etc., that would let these badboys loose on my computer, i've been checking my mail through some online e-mail sites. Anyways, I've been suspecting its a virus..

Does anyone know if its happened before, where even online e-mail sites like AOL, Yahoo Mail, and Hotmail are sending out crap like this without the user knowing? I know theres viruses that take your addressbook from Outlook Express, and other programs, and spread the virus in that fashion, but does that effect Hotmail, Yahoo, and AOL too?

Another trick of many of these virii is that they spoof the From: header with someone else from the victim's address book. So, it's possible that the e-mails you are receiving are from people who have both you and the apparent sender in their address books.

Sucks, doesn't it?

edit: what the heck just happened? my post started and ended correctly, but the middle was a bunch of random uppercase letters...!

edit #2: it did it again. :(

Definitely smells like a virus. Of course you don't need to be told to run exe files. Some of these viruses spoof where they come from.

bout the spoofing, wouldn't my other friends be getting it too? i've been talking to 'em, and it seems like i've been the only one so far?

Sounds like the Klez worm. It sends mail from the infected persons computer with headers saying it is from someone else in their address book. So in reality you are getting it from only one or a small number of people but it looks likes a ton. I had a friend who had it on her computer and she knew everyone here at the office it really slowed down our email system. Klez sends itself with an attachment and a file from that person's computer, sometimes it can be sensitive data.
