from what was posted in the deals section this offer sounds way too good to be true. I read the details at columbiahouse.com after i put in the savings code and all it says is i get 5 dvds for $25 which includedes free shipping. it doesn't mention i have to buy anything else. anyone know more about this deal or is this just it? just sounds too good to be true. thanks.
Don't do it. They'll get you somehow, like I did.
Don't be a victim!

I just signed up even though I'm already a member. They don't make their money on the initial sale. They make money on the monthly "Director's Selections" or whatever they call them. If you don't send back the little postcard every month they'll automatically send you the "Director's Selection" and charge you $35+ for it. With this deal it looks like you can just quit after you get your stuff but the trick is figuring out how to quit. They don't make it easy.

uh... it ain't hard at all to quit. i did columbiahouse last summer and quit online easily and rejected the directors selection too online. i did this deal and so did everyone on dvdtalk.com hurry up and do it. believe me its worth it.

It seems that after you put in the code, you are limited to the selections that they show you... you can't search for any specific titles. Am I wrong, is there another way of doing it? Can you call this one in? Has anyone verified with a customer service rep that there are no committments?

Yeah, it's easy to quit. It's just impossible to get them to accept it. They will hound you fovever. When you consider your overall expenses of the deal, include the cost of sending them a certified letter telling them you quit. I would never sign up with them or BMG again.

well all i did to quit back in august was quit on there site and that was it. not sure what happened with you. i signed up and was able to select any movie on the site.

OK... went back and found a little trick. Seems if you put the code in first, then you can only pick out of the titles they give you, and there doesn't seem to be a search field either. But if you find the ones you want first, and or use the search field, pick 5 and then put the code in there, then you are all set to go... still hoping that there is no committment though since it doesn't state that there will be any. This is also my second account, signed up under the same name and even the same credit card. Hope they don't reject it though according to the website, I seemed to have signed up fine.

you signed up for the same code twice?
Use it twice and they'll reject both, from what I hear. Use at own risk.

according to the experts at DVDTalk in this thread (http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=267670), there are no fulfillment obligations.
people, this is an AMAZING deal. i don't know when you are going to find DVDs for $5/each again -- and i think the only way to get them cheaper is to steal them.
check out this thread (http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=107726) for more info on what titles are available, etc.

i did another deal w/them and quit online w/no hassles.
at the end of signing up for this they offer you 2 free dvds for signing a friend up, but it seems they have to use the 5 for .49 deal, not this one. i send myself an email to see if i can get the 5 for $25 as the 'friend,' meaning an overall 12 for $50. i have some friends who might actually do this, so theres potential to get lots of free dvds out of this (2/friend)!
i signed up and i'm crossing my fingers to see if i actually receive my dvds. i had an account that i closed 30 days ago and they HAVE been harassing me to rejoin. i guess this is my "rejoining" hahahahaha :)

i did refer myself w/a different email and address, but the email it sent had the 5/.49 + 3 later deal. i followed the link and put in the 5 for $25 code (at first it wouldnt let me, but after a few tries it went through) so ill keep my fingers crossed that the referral goes through

I kinda choose my dvd's first and put the promo code later. I got the email for doing that, anyone get the actual, "You've been approved and item shipped" confirmation?

Well, I took advantage of the deal. Once they arrive how exactly does one go about cancelling a membership?
You can cancel your membership online now. That's what i did a month ago with my old account :)

Yes but you are easily amused! :hehehmm:
I used it twice with 2 diff cards, hopefully it'll go thru. The thing is, I haven't gotten one email from them regarding anything, not even the fact that I placed an order...(I ordered yesterday) Is this normal? Anyways if this goes through it'll be kickass!!

this deal is gonna be canceled by columbiahouse. i heard they made a mistake. ****. that sucks. got my hopes up too. read more at dvdtalk.com
I have received an email confirming this order and that my "application" was being processed. Since I am no longer a member and they have been begging me to return, I expect them to ship my dvd's soon :)

01-31-2003, 11:22 PM
you already got an email confirmation? ****, i ordered last night and haven't gotten one yet. when did you order, lilbigblue?
I placed an order for this also just last night and within 5 minutes i had that same confirmation e-mail stating that my application was being processed. I believe that since this is my only membership with them (now  i canceled my old one) that it'll go through.

Just placed my order and got my confirmation a few minutes later. I'll just have to wait and see what the membership details in the package outline.
This is an awesome deal. Oh...and cancelling is a piece of cake. It took me an entire 2.5 minutes last time.
So has this deal been cancelled? I see people with "being-processed" confirmation e-mails, but none that have "shipped" confirmations.

I just went to the site, put in code cycd and membership details say if i don't like the program I can return my introductory package in 10 days at their expense and owe nothing. deal must have changed.

I got my confirmation e-mail this morning saying that I was now a DVD club member. I checked out the site and under purchase requirements it read:
"You have completed your purchase requirements for the account corresponding to the account number above. You now enjoy our best benefits as a Preferred Member."
When you are ready to cancel your account follow these steps:
1. Log into your account on their web site.
2. Click on the 'Club Help' link in the upper right.
3. Click on the 'Membership Info' link on the left.
4. Click on the 'How do I cancel my membership?' question and it will provide a link to where you can cancel.
Got my confirmation today as well. I'm gonna wait till I have the dvd's in my hot little hands before I cancel.
I just received my confirmation email that my DVDs have been SHIPPED!
"The following selection(s) were shipped on 02/05/2003 and should arrive shortly:"

I'm going to wait until they say mine are shipped, give it like another week just to be safe, then it's cancel city!
Anyone know if this deal is still available for new members? I have some freinds who want in.
yes it is good for new members. Make sure you send a referal from you account so you can get 2 more FREE DVD's. Make the most of it.

right on. I'm going to refer a few friends and possibly my other e-mail account. maybe

about the cancelling account thing, why is everyone so concerned about cancelling their accounts with the cycd code? won't your account just sit there becuz you have no committments or anything
no it won't. you'll still have to at least go online and decline the director's selection every month. otherwise, no other commitments.

Where is this search field that some of you have mentioned? I still only see the extremely limited selection and find myself less than satisfied.

Has anyone looked into what some of these DVD's go for sealed on ebay? Chance to make some major profit here!

Hey i signed up a few days ago but I still haven't gotten any email from columbiahouse. How long does it take to get email from them regarding membership approval or shipment?
RebelScum
02-07-2003, 08:22 AM
ProMinx, make sure you are on the "white/blue" site (looks kinda like Apex's screen shot above) and not the "red" site. What happens is, sometimes when you go to the site, it gives you an "alternate" site where you can't search, and you only have limited selections. It seems that a guaranteed way to get the "good" site is to go to http://www.columbiahouse.com and instead of clicking on "Join the DVD Club," click on "Join the Video Club" and then at the top right click on "DVD Club." Now you should be in the "good" site. I'd suggest making all 5 of your selections before putting in the code, or else it might limit your selections again.
Actually, there are a few titles available that don't show up on the site at all. Like Terminator 2: Judgement Day: Ultimate Edition (#2499507). Oh yes. I think the only way to get these is to sign up over the phone. 1-888-242-3837. (These selections don't show up on the site, even if you search by selection #.) To get a pretty complete list of titles, with a listing of those only available by phone, go to the forums at dvdtalk.com . I will not even attempt to duplicate their posts here (it is massive)!
However, I signed up a week ago(!) by phone, and still have never received e-mail confirmation. I signed up twice that day, both over the phone (they allow you two active memberships). I called yesterday and they said that one of my memberships went through and has shipped, but I see no charge on my credit card. They gave me a membership # over the phone, but whenever I try it on the site, it says it's not recognized. So the status of that membership is kinda sketchy, and I have no idea whether the 2nd even went through at all (they said it could still be waiting for approval or something).

It still works! I just went to columbiahouse.com, clicked on join video club on right side. Then I clicked dvd club on top right corner, entered code cycd or is it cdcy (forgot) and chose cds but didn't finish signing up because i already have accounts. Try it again as described as see what you get. good luck

CD's? You mean the code worked for Columbia House CD's too?
mrsnshick
02-07-2003, 02:22 PM
OOPS - the reference to cd's is a mistake. I meant dvd's. I just tried to help someone get this offer and get an error message and the choice of 2 dvd programs (49 cents and 12 free). Don't know if it's just a glitch due to heavy traffic or if the offer has been pulled.

naters22, I'm waiting on the same thing. I got the 1st email right away - then nothing. The strange thing is that my brother signed up a few days after me and his shipped!
Also, on the website, it never asked me for my cc info, while my bro had to put his in. Maybe that has something to do with it. Has anyone else not put in a cc# and still gotten their dvd's?

I joined about two weeks ago and still haven't received anything form them except for a mailing inviting me to become a member. funny thing, they didn't mention any code in their mailing, so if I subscribe by using the form they sent me then I would have to submit to the usual obligations.
Does anyone have the number to call them?
