Ok,
I have checked all the back info on dvd players and found out the cheapest deals and how get them free with this and that but that not what I am looking for. I did some research on the Sony products mentioned and the reviews of people who own them are awful. I have a b-day coming up and the girl freind is going to get me a dvd player and I am trying to find the best deal on a quality dvd player for around $300.00 . Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Where have you been reading that the Sony reviews are awful??? Sony's, Toshiba's and Pioneers are the most accoladed DVD player's by audiophiles today. I personally own a Sony 530 and I made my decision soley on the great reviews it got. I've owned it for almost 1 year and haven't had one problem with it yet.

See this is my problem. I don't know who to trust. This was the one I was looking at and then I read the reviews at the bottom and it made me think.

I bought the SOny 560D-VPS for $250. I think it is the best player out there for your money. It has a built in Dolby Digital Decoder, so if you have a digital ready reciever, you can have full digital sound. It is Sony's next-gen line of DVD players, and does not have the lip-synching problem of the 530 and 550's. It has too many great features to list, nevermind that you probably won't ever use them all. Highly recommended. Email me with any more questions.

Wow, didn't relize they had released the 560. Judging from the price it appears to be less than the 530 and the 550 which is kind of confusing since it has a number above the 550 (which is a lot more $$$) you would think it was a better model. As for the lip-syncing problems with the 530 and 550, that was fixed a long time ago. I bought mine about a year ago and they had fixed the problem 2 months earlier.
I just bought my mother the 530 for her birthday for $229 which was a steal considering there are still places that want $399 for it. The nicest feature are all of the outputs on the back interface, it has 6 outs for 5.1 alone. Anyway, good luck on your purchase, you'll love the world of DVD!
Here are some more positive reviews you can check out. These people might be a little more "in tune" than Yahoo...hehe.

I bought a Pioneer DV-626 several weeks ago and I love it. It is one of the top of the line Pioneer. MSRP is $645, but you can find it for around $330. It plays all regions, vcd, music, burned music, and burned vcd. Quality of the picture is great. It's got all the top of the line features. Check it out. I totally recommend this player.
G_Sup is right.
Generally, reviews from directly and unedited from users are not very trustworthy in my opinion. The downloads from Cnet also have user reviews and they aren't very helpful to me. Read the reviews from audio magazines and the like.
And if you do figure out which player to get, let me know! I'm looking for a good DVD player too, in addition to a DVD-rom drive.
(yes, i'm that money krazeee)

$300 will now buy you a progressive pioneer unit. Don't settle for less since you can get a progressive in your budget.

The Sony 560D is the newer model of the 530, and the 570 is the newer model of the 550. All have on board Dolby digital, optical and coax audio outs, 5.1 outs and a whole lot of other really good features. Why get a prgressive scan if you don't have a HDTV, or plan on dropping 1500 to 2k in the near future?
SONY 's 560 isnt progressive scan?..Does it play VCD aleast?
I see progressive scan as a good investment even though ya not droping 1500K in the coming month for the HDTV. I figure, ya going to have ya DVD for 4 yrs +, by then HDTV price would of dropped and be the standard...
Let us know what ya end up buying,
I too am look for a DVD player...time to replace that old laser disc player i never use.

I am lost on the Progressive scan part. My system is old but reliable and I am not about to drop $2000.00 for a new receiver and big screen. At least not until my company goes public.
How will progressive scan effect my system? Does it matter if my system is old and I have a progressive scan dvd player? I am trying to find systems that have progressive scan and from what I see from Pioneer they are not in the 300.00 ball park. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/confused.gif
Progressive scan is still good on normal TV's. Believe it or not, there IS a quality difference between DVD players. You'll see artifacts and things on cheaper DVD's and things that you won't see on a high quality normal DVD or progressive scan one.
There was a post on the deals page back on 7/31/00 for the Pioneer progressive DVD-434 for $289.

Apex, if the pioneer 434 has progressive scan, does that mean that the 626 also has progressive scan?? Because I just recently purchased the 626 without even considering that feature, so i just wanted to know.
just wanted to say i love the picture quality of the toshibas but they dont have all the best features. i've even seen better features ideas on some samsung dvd's. every company has something to offer and falls short in another area. watch out

Yeah, the 560 plays vcds as well as normal DVD's and audio cds...
No, the 434 is their first progressive scan. As far as I know, Toshiba has a few (SD5109C, 6200, 9100, 9200), panasonic has one, mitsubishi has one, hitachi has one, and there's this one. Manufacturers will start coming out with them, but they're still rare. Under $300 for a progressive has previously been unheard of.

I (and 3 other family members/friends) have and love the sony 530. It has unbelievable frame forward and frame reverse capabilities -- which is important if you like checking out special effects, animation or very brief nudity http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/wink.gif

Go with the Pioneer dv-333. My dad owns an audio video store. This is the replacement for the dv 525 which was (and is still a great machine. You can get it at costco for I think about $199 which is cheeper than we can buy them wholesale. Then in the future you can get a modification for I think about 450 which makes the audio and video better than the top of the line pioneer which is used as the reference for the industry.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the 560 doesn't play CD-R's? Is this true?
What would I do with my Napster collection of pirated...errrr..I mean, copyright-free shared music? http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
