View Full Version : Get a lot of spam?

I have been getting close to 50 spam emails a day, mostly pr0n ( ). It was getting tiresome, considering I had close to 20 filters in my email and it still wasn't getting rid of most of it. Now, I'm not getting any! :D

I don't remember how I came across it (someone recommended it in a forum I was reading  ) but this program is called MailWasher. http://www.mailwasher.net/

It is FANTASTIC! You can keep it open all day, minimized to your taskbar, out of the way. You put in your email stuff (you can import it from your regular email program - and it works with multiple accounts. I have 10 it checks...), then it logs on to the server. In the window, it will bring up all the email that you have not downloaded from the server yet. You can click on them to preview the message. You can set it to 3 levels, which will determine how they will mark messages. I have it set to medium, so it marks things as probable spam for deletion, bouncing (which will make the spam sender think your email is invalid), and blacklisting (which will automatically delete emails from that sender, I believe. Others, the medium level will mark as possible spam but not check them. Some slips through saying Normal, but I check them and then just check mark them to delete, bounce & blacklist.

Once you have checked all the stuff you want deleted (which doesn't have to be spam - for my work stuff, I have 7 email addresses that ALL get the same mail. So I can delete 6 copies of most of that email.), bounced & blacklisted, you choose Process Mail. If you have left some messages unchecked (your normal mail), it will finish processing the spam & whatnot, then open your regular email program (I use Eudora but didn't even have to tell it that, it just grabbed it.) and you download the other messages like normal.

You can set it to not check between X & X hours (I have it set not to check between 2-8 AM, just cause there is no point, since I'm not up). You can also add friends (whitelisting, I believe), so that when you get an email from them, it automatically marks them as legitimate. May make them easier to sort, depending on how much email you get at a time.

Anyway, that's my spiel. It is free to use, with 1 banner ad (just a message from the creator, not flashing or annoying or anything). You can also donate any amount of money you want to and it will register you and you can put in the registration number it gives you and the banner disappears. I donated $10 because I love the program so much. :)

Orr. . . just get a mac :D. OS X's Mail app is EXCELLENT. I used to average about 50-80 junkmails a day on my gotapex account, the spam filter is very intelligent and is on a learn as you go basis. I'd say it gets about 95% of the spam in the right junk box and has only had 3 e-mails in the junk box that weren't in the last 5 months I've been using it. Also, it has this great return to sender feature that makes it look to the sender the address is invalid. I started to use that feature about a month ago, now I get about 20 junk mails a day. GREAT GREAT GREAT program, that alone makes OS X more than its worth.

That's what the MailWasher's Bounce is. :)

Scott has been using OS X at work and loves it, too. ;)

Like i6s1 said, yup. I mean, I'm using XP. But not outlook express. But I believe it does, yes.

Ameritech and SBC Global combined last week and they are now both partnered with Yahoo... and since then, they have had everyone loading up all this new software for their DSL service and I have been having a few minor problems as of late.

Not to worry... I rebooted and now I can access the file. Pretty screwy stuff to say the least.

Yeah, I switched to the Yahoo stuff a month or so ago. It's ok so far. No big deal. heh

I put a shortcut to it down by my email program. At first, I kept forgetting and clicking on the email, so that is why the shortcut is there. In the morning, double click it and it will open up and begin checking the email addys you have put in. Once you have marked all the ones for deletion and click on Process Mail, if you have some left over that are not set to delete, it will automatically open your email program and start downloading those messages. When that happens, I just minimize the MailWasher and it goes and hides in my system tray.

You can set it to automatically check for new mail every XX minutes. (Due to my work stuff, I have it set to check every 10.)

Lemme know if you have more questions. :)
