I just called Pac Bell to switch to a non-usb modem, and listen this horror story:

I called to ask if I could change my modem to a non-usb one, and the lady asked me if I placed an order... I gave her my phone numbers (voice and data) and she tells me it looks like you placed an order, but I have no data from the order. So now we have to place ANOTHER order.

I was like WTF! I ordered this on monday, got the confirmation number and everything, and you are telling me that the order did not even go through and that now I have to wait ANOTHER week to get this installed!? She said that the systems are all screwed up and that something is going around cleaning out orders, and it's causing all sorts of havoc.

So I had to re-place my order, and now I get to wait 3 weeks from today for them to come with the hours of 8am and 8pm. YAY! It's a damn good thing I don't NEED that dsl line... Man. So much for getting that DSL before I went back to school... aiyaiyai!

I recommend that NO ONE get Pac Bell's DSL service, unless they absolutely have to! I hear that GTE has extrodinary DSL, but you have to be using GTE's phone service. It might be worthwhile to switch.

Downloading 1.45MB from 283.752.748.153
remaining time 2 hours 34 minutes
Ahh the joys of dialup.

Ugh, best of luck man. I gave up on them after 4 weeks of them bumbling around and 12 hours of being on hold.

If they give you a discount for providing your own modem dsl modem, let me know, I have one.

BTW, make sure you tell them they you DON'T have usb (or they'll give you a cheezy usb modem), and want an external.

Apex, USB?! wtf is the usb for? I just orded dsl from them, and I get to wait 3 weeks for them to install it... YAY! anyway, maybe I should call them back today and request a non-usb modem, but if it is a usb modem, what does the usb do? Cuz the ethernet card connects to the modem, and then to the wall... what use is the extra usb plug?

call them up and tell them you are an employee who is expecting installation of dsl service and request a discount code for installation charges or order over the phone and usually they will wave those fees. its a good idea to find out where an engineering office is or your local "yard" for the installers. 90% of the time they do not question where or who you work for though.

I wouldn't sign up for Pac Bell DSL if I was you. I just read in the paper that they were being sued because of late installs, and billing customers before they even got their service up. Apparently it will be a big class action law suit against them.

Pacbell merged with ASI. They lost 10,000 customer records in 1 event, then lost a second batch of 14,000 customer records. Think your order record is in one of those? Chances are, yes. Mine was.

USB DSL modems suck for 2 reasons:

They run off of your cpu power. It's basically a software modem. Thus, less power/ram for other applications.

They add a little bit of latency. So your pings go up. Sucks, eh?

I thot Pacbell merged with SBC communications... oh well either way, I am kinda pissed that my account got wiped, now my installation is delayed another week, but thanks for responding about the usb modem, I figured thats what the prob was, and its a DAMN good thing I called to switch, otherwise I wouldnt have even gotten DSL. >=/

I got the same problem with PacBell DSL, they are slow, disconnect sometimes, block out, and I've waited my service for over one month. They also screw up my order.
PacBell DSL is no way compares to Cox cable modem which I was using. DO NOT BELEIVE the commercial PacBell put on TV claimed that cable modem is slower than their DSL. If you want to choose between cable modem and DSL, I strongly recommend cable modem.

Have any of you had better results with other DSL services?

the main reason i wanted to get DSL for my home is because of the upload speeds. @home has capped the upload in our city, don't know why, and we've tried to get ours uncapped. without any luck, we've decided to switch to a DSL service.

seems like with all those negative replies, we'll be looking into other DSL options other than pac bell.

any of you have recommendations?
we've tried covad before, and our house is about 400ft. too far away for a speed upgrade, so it's pretty slow.

anyway, thanks for all the replies, hope to hear more

Here's my advise... Put your house on wheels, and move 400ft =D. Or if you can, get GTE (Switch your phone carrier to GTE) their service is supposed to be Superb.

What is a USB modem? I use pacbell, and they gave me a Alcatel dSL modem. It moves pretty fast at nigt, but during the day a lot of times I am stuck going slower than a 56k modem.

Anyhow, I canceled my service and so I have this Alcatel modem if anyone wants it. I am not sure how much it is worth.

Whats so bad about USB dsl modems? (mine is on it's way through the mail) =| Pacbell's service is screwed up though, when I called to order, their systems crashed 3 times while trying to proccess my order and i had to call back 2 times since their systems were so screwed. If you order through the phone just ask them about the current DSL deals, you don't need any coupons.

GTE is the bomb. Nice representitive, friendly technician (I even went out to have lunch w/em once) and quick respond, unlike PacBell. My ADSL has always been on (except for some maintenance which they will email you ahead of the time and operate it during off peak hours) and not to mention the speed is superb. Usually I have 750kb download speed maybe 'cause CO is just on the next street. <wink> My other ADSL line is right on the limit of the DSL and I constantly have between 550kb to 650kb download speed. I'd strongly suggest GTE over PacBell from my personal experience.

Mahalo yea i am guessing it is
if it doesn't plug into a USB port then it's not a USB modem...

Man, get Road Runner cable modem over PacBell DSL if you get the chance... PacBell is owned by SBC, the two didn't merge...And, they are severely understaffed when it comes to setting up DSL lines. That you know, what you don't know: They know it and aren't doing anything about it. You'd think they'd bump up their employees in that dept.

if performance is your only concern, spend the money for a satellite internet connection. it will definately cost more, but dsl and cable cannot touch the speed or consistency of the satellite. its not available everywhere, yet, but it is a very reliable source of access and really worth the money. if you already have satellite tv, then you can probably get a package deal, especially sonce this is a new feature and they are dying to sign people up.

Pac-bell costumer here since February for DSL. The good thing is that the low consumer rates are for speeds betwen 384-1.5 so you sometimes get very fast speeds. The only problem with DSL that I have had is that I have been charged with installion 2 months after dsl was installed. A quick phone call fixed that surprisingly. 1-800-NETHELP is SBC's phone number, and they bought out pac-bell. GTE is now Verizon, who knows if that will change anything. And the modem we recieved the the Alcatel one, its not USB, and its very fast.

I signed up on Feberary and got my installation within early March,
instead of getting any external modem,
I got an ATM internal card. I'm told I'm five blocks away from the central server
of my area.
There's one time I call tech sup, they say they don't support the ATM I got. I was upset because I basically just installed it for a month back then.
The speed is very good, plus the fact that all the big sites' servers is in the bay area, that make download speed really fast.
One thing though, they didn't charge me for anything for aprox. 3 months, after the merge or whatever that is, they started charging me and bill me for four months in one bill.

There's someone at my office, who has gotten free DSL from GTE for 9 months now. Why? He has no idea, he signed up, got it installed, and has never received a bill. Go figure
