Just this week, low test went up to almost $1.60. The cheapest fuel oil is near $1.50.
This has to have an effect on driving habits and the economy in general.

Hahah, Costco has some pretty cheap gas too, but I wonder how they do it cause I dont' think there's any possible way for them to have MORE gas than the competitors?

No, I'm sure he meant 80 cents per litre. That's about US$2.10 per gallon. Quite high compared to most areas of the US, but not completely unbelievable.
87 octane in my area is 68.9 cents per litre or about US$1.81 per gallon. The cheapest in Canada is probably around US$1.55 per gallon.

$1.60 a gallon for regular. I filled up last night without looking at the price and I was shocked when it was over $20 to fill my tank. First time in my life that happened.

talked to my dad today, he's got a buddy that owns a filling station. that guy said prices(for him) will increase again tonight and then again on tuesday night. the gas being deilvered to him tomorrow is going to cost him $1.64. he said that his gas will retail for over $2 in about 3 weeks.
Been hovering around $1.50 for 87 for about 3 weeks now. Thank goodness for 40mpg ;)

I don't know how you got $2.10 per gal. According to your calculations, there is about 2.625 litres in a gal. How many litres are in your gal? http://www.thetipsbank.com/convert.htm (just a convert site off of google, first on the list)

I filled up with 87 octane yesterday for $1.599/gallon yesterday.
Personally, I think the gas prices are fine. Considering inflation, the prices should actually be higher. A few years ago, when gas was available for like $0.899/gallon, when you took inflation into consideration, gas prices were at their cheapest in history.
Gasoline tends to be a fairly elastic product, yet I hope that there comes a point when the prices become high enough to keep more people off of the roads, especially the SUV drivers with their 30 gallon tanks that need to be refilled at least once a week.

That's kinda what I said (and I actually roughly calculated $2.10). But my point was, it's not the $3.20 per litre someone calculated earlier.

Not every product's price adjusts with inflation. If real wages, product prices and commodities all increase at the same rate with inflation, then it really isnt inflation is it?

gas in US is so cheap , its definitely not something i'd whine about. back in india, an average guy would prbly earn about 25,000 rps a month, thats like what US$600/month. and gas is right now 37rps/litre of petrol (ya they call it petrol, not gasoline, well most of the world does, except US and its kids) there. proportionally a lot higher than what gas costs here.

Ah, gotcha.
People complain about the price of gas up here no matter what the price (no different than the US I'm sure), often myself included, but what we all have to remember is how damn good we still have it. I could be a LOT worse (all are per gallon prices converted to US$):
Austria - $3.49
Belgium - $4.13
Denmark - $4.55
Finland - $4.24
Frnace - $4.24
Germany - $4.47
Greece - $3.22
Holland - $4.74
Hungary - $3.90
Ireland - $3.60
Italy - $4.36
Luxembourg - $3.22
Norway - $4.81
Poland - $3.37
Portugal - $3.87
Spain - $3.37
Sweden - $4.05
Switzerland - $3.64
Then we might actually think a little bit before we get behind the wheel. "Do I really need to make this trip?" "Could I walk or take the bus?" And when you did drive somewhere, you'd damn well make it worthwhile too. No going out for a pack of gum.
I know I'm guilty of this. I think most of North America is as well. When I need something, I never think twice about how much it's going to cost. It's insignificant. I just go and get it.
I wonder how high gas would have to get before I actually changed my habits? I think it would have to almost double before I made any significant changes.
And I wonder how high gas would have to go before people would stop driving gas guzzling SUV's & trucks? $2.50/gallon? $3.00/gallon? Higher????

$1.45 - just filled up today
Bires
02-10-2003, 07:53 PM
it was $1.38 two weeks ago.
BTW: Most of us know why this is, right? It is NOT Iraq or OPEC. OPEC voted to increase production for our winter months and we don't get oil for commercial gas from Iraq.
It's the general labor strike in Venezuela. They WERE our third largest source of imported oil. I really feel for their country, especially since the media over here hasn't given them any airtime.
FYI: Their president was voted out of office but refused to step down. With the power of the military behind him, he didn't have to leave. He was very anti-labor, and was voted out because of poor economy and joblessness. So...the workers struck, and the country is in chaos now. Man... :disa:
