View Full Version : 80's nostalgia making a comeback?

The guy sitting next to me is REALLY into transformers. Evidently, he's going to a conference in Boston with other collectors around the country.
Aside from the rest of us wonder how the culture stayed alive all these years, I'm hearing all sorts of 80's stuff being brought back: He-Man, Voltron, TMNT, and Joey Lawrence. (Well, not Joey, Thank God.)
So why are they bringing all of this stuff back from the dead? Don't kids nowadays have their own culture to embrace?

Maybe people are finally starting to realize that the culture that today's youth has been forced to embrace is crap compared to what it was back in the 80s and early 90s. There are just no quality cartoons on anymore on Saturday morning. The Pokemon thing is getting a little played out and good ol' American products may be taking over. :)
Give me my box of old G.I. Joe stuff over Pikachu any day!
Bring 'em back baby! I agree that todays cartoons are crap. The last good cartoon show was the Animaniacs.

These things run in cycles. The decade before the previous always seems to come back in style. In the 1990's it was the 1970's that were popular. And so it goes...

its just a way make more money off of an established and tried product. these already have an audience even if it doesnt catch on with the younger crowd. im totally into 80's nostalgia (if you couldnt tell ;)). producers dont need to go out and find new ideas when they know that these were hugely successful in thier prime and they all ended on a high note. they dont need to take as high risks with these as with an unknown product. ive thought about actually going to bot-con, but i guess im not that much of a nerd :P. there is definately a market and an almost guarenteed profit on this. all they have to do is recycle story lines and draw the episodes in a new style that will appeal to audiences. you can tell by current programming that networks arent working overtime on original stuff with all the reality shows which are just one idea with variations. i mean, how many dating shows do people actually need?

Funny thing is back in the 80's and early 90's the same thing was being said compared to earlier times.

I think as technology started to advance, everything else in the world entered a constant downhill streak. I bet there will be a time sooner or later when WHATEVER you do, "been there done that" will be the reaction. I believe it is only natural that we tend to reminisce and turn to "the good ol' days."

If you guys look at the some of the old cartoons now...you'll realize what utter horsecrap they are. I was raised loving Transformers, GI Joe, TMNT, and Voltron...but now that I've grown up I downloaded the entire run of each of those shows from Kazaa (did you guys know that TMNT lasted 13 season!?)...and most of them really suck. GI Joe was the absolute worst, but I remember loving it so much as a kid (it must've been the toys). I'd say that of the four that I mentioned, the only ones still worth watching would be TMNT and Transformers.

PS - Have you guys seen that new He-Man show? I was at my parent's house one weekend and bored Saturday morning, so I turned it on and watched for a few minutes. It was so different from the original that I didn't realize that it was He-Man until someone referred to him as such. I don't remember flying motorcycles and weird human/bee hybrids...

Can't stand Transformers Armada. Just a pokemon themed cartoon...gotta collect all of the mini-cons.
I agree that Justice League needs a boat load of more episodes. I can't think of any quality toons out now....Kirby? I dunno...
Anyone see the Simpons and saw what Bart wrote on the chalkboard? Something like "Spongebob is not a contraceptive". It was funny :D

This isn't really 80s, but what's up with throwback sports teams uniforms becoming hip? Like what Lebron James took from that store. 1 jersey equal to $400???
Those jerseys are ugly too!

But yet and still, it has grown on me somewhat, and with Stage 2 transformations (Like Optimus' secondary robot mode) and Dual Powerlinks (they have Optimus and JetFire being able to powerlink together)... WOW!
They didn't have that in the original... Optimus only had that "mini base" in his trailer... with the drone. But that was about it. :hihi:
They did have "powerlinks" of a sort back in the day. Don't you remember the constructicons? They could link together to form this mega-robot. Eventually the Autobots had some weird combination of Jets that also became a huge robot. I forget what the Autobot Jet conversion deal was called though. I remember that they had the Constructicons in both green and yellow for the toy too. I had the green one when I was a kid, but I forget what happened to them. A few years back I was bored on e-bay and bought a big box of like 85 different Transformers including an entire Yellow Constructicon set. I still have all of those toys...in the box...in a closet. Talka bout a waste of 90 bucks... One of these days I'll split up the items in the box and re-sell the items on e-bay (hopefully for a profit).

PS - I haven't seen Transformers Armada yet. The overwhelming opinion here is negative...but I'll try to download a few episodes anyway.
