Its one of the most idiotic and arrogant diplomatic manuevers you could make. Basically they're admitting they have no real intention of preventing NATO support of Turkey when under attack, but just want to oppose America to make a statement. So not only are they pissing the **** out of their most powerful and reliable ally, but they're not even SERIOUS about their position! Idiotic, I say!

I've heard he has already authorized an emergency shipment of 10,000 white flags to the Turkish front lines! :P

France just as a policy, goes against anything the US stands for.
Why they're even part of NATO is beyond me. Actually, while i'm on the topic...why NATO even exists is beyond me.

France defending anything would almost be amusing to watch :P

Actually, Italy would be even funnier to watch. Remember they had trouble with Ethiopia.

there was an interesting column by thomas friedman (who obviously has his own biases, as does any columnist) in the NYT suggesting that india would make a better member of the security council than france.

had some interesting points. most relevant to this discussion is that france seems to make policy based on "whatever the u.s. says, we say the opposite." i have no problem whatsoever with other countries opposing u.s. policy decisions, but i'd prefer that it be based on some sort of intelligent reason rather than blind attempts to try to make themselves look "different"

I'm glad someone agrees with my observation!

Not on Snopes (yet) but I laughed

A letter home from a marine with the multinational force in Bosnia:

Dear Dad,

A funny thing happened to me yesterday at Camp Bondsteel (Bosnia): A French army officer walked up to me in the PX, and told me he thought we (Americans) were a bunch of cowboys and were going to provoke a war in Iraq. He said if such a thing happens, we wouldn't be able to count on the support of France.

I told him that it didn't surprise me. Since we had come to France's rescue in World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the Cold War, their ingratitude and jealousy was due to surface, again, at some point in the near future anyway.

I also told him that is why France is a third-rate military power with a socialist economy and a bunch of f@ggots for soldiers. I additionally told him that America, being a nation of deeds and action, not words, would do whatever it had to do, and France's support, if it ever came, was only for show anyway. Just like in ALL NATO exercises, the US would shoulder 85% of the burden, and provide 85% of the support, as evidenced by the fact that this French officer was shopping in the American PX, and not the other way around.

He began to get belligerent at that point, and I told him if he would like to, I would meet him outside in front of the Burger King and whip his @ss in front of the entire Multi-National Brigade East, thus demonstrating that even the smallest American had more fight in him than the average Frenchman. He called me a barbarian cowboy and walked away in a huff. With friends like these, who needs enemies?
