ok. some of you may remember my getting a promotion recently. (http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54928&highlight=job+opportunity) i've been waiting for my increase to show up in my check and haven't gotten it yet. i called my HR guy today and asked what was up. he told me that it hadn't been put in the system yet, which is slightly annoying but when it does come through, it will be retroactive. so i'm not losing any money. anyhow, he tells me, your new salary is X400/month. however, the job offer letter was just for X000/month. :kaching: (am i being dumb for not putting the actual amount?) i told him, "umm, i don't think that was the right amount. he said, "oh yeah, i'm looking at the letter right here." so my questions is, do i dig up the original job offer letter and show it to him? do i ask my boss? do i just feign ignorance and enjoy the extra 400/month? keep in mind, i'm a christian so i'm trying to do the right thing. not the one that's necessarily the one i can get away with.

Well, I'd say tell your boss. I think you'd probably consider it the ethical thing to do. For all you know, it was your offer letter that was wrong.

Also, it could look bad if the mistake is discovered later, and you didn't say anything about it.

You never know, but I'd say the "right" thing to do would be to ask your boss.

If you are concerned about it, ask your boss about it, the one who made you the offer.

Yeah....I think I would talk to your boss. You'd probably get some points for being an honest person.

i'm going to have to walk a tightrope here. i want the extra money, but i want to cover my bases and be honest. what i think i'll do is tell my boss (who is VERY cool and an honest-to-goodness good guy), "boss, i just spoke with hr and the raise they told i'm getting is different than what i remember being offered. i discussed this with them and they informed that they had the official job offer and that i was wrong. i just wanted you to be aware of the situation in the event it is brought up."

sounds good to me. maybe he'll reward you by letting you keep that extra money for being so honest.

That's exactly the right way to go about it. With any luck, they'll let you keep it, and you'll come out looking good! :)

I think your approach is the right one. If you weren't honest, there would always be the chance of you getting screwed in the future.

straight up....honor God no matter what, and God will honor that.

sure you could use the 400.
we could all 'use' the extra dough...

but God will give you what you need, so don't worry.

i just talked to both of my bosses. apparently my call to hr generated a lot of heat from above. they apologized to me for forgetting to put the change in. they basically ignored me when i told them that they were giving me more than i was first offered. God is good to me!!! that's going to be a huge check when it all comes in. prob a few grand more than usual.
